“Plenty of time to settle down.” Alhaitham rubs Mehrak’s ears, and she leans into his touch. What betrayal. “You’re acting like you’ll wither away if you don’t get another date by next week.”
“You don’t get it,” says Kaveh, shaking his head. “Sometimes, I think I’ll never leave this house.”
Alhaitham’s hand stills on Mehrak’s head. His expression is carefully neutral, or in other words, practically unreadable. Nevertheless, his passivity isn’t perfect, and the subtle clench of his jaw is hard to miss for someone who knows Alhaitham as well as Kaveh does.
“You want to move out?” asks Alhaitham.

Never one to listen to Kaveh, Alhaitham plucked one of the books from his hands, and Kaveh scrabbled to keep his hold on the other two. Alhaitham turned the book over and read the title, printed in gold on the cover.
“How to Manage Your Libido: A Guide to Navigating Masturbation Addiction,” Alhaitham read. One corner of his lip raised. “Interesting research you’ve got here.”

A good heart, much like yours.” She nudges Kaveh good-naturedly. “Extraordinarily smart too. Always has his nose buried in a book.” She shakes her head in affection, fondness buzzing off her. “Ah! I’m rambling, aren’t I?”
“Not at all,” says Kaveh, proving himself to be every bit of the sweet boy she knows he is. “Your grandson sounds wonderful.”
“He is,” she says, a wistful note woven in her voice. “My pride and joy.”

He studied the Alhaitham before him, who was oh-so-unaware of the many fights and sleepless nights to come. The last thing Kaveh wanted to do was hurt him like he’d done in the past.
“We’re not friends?” said Alhaitham, eyes blown wide. His lips parted as if he didn’t expect Kaveh’s answer—which was fair, considering that Kaveh would be surprised too if he was his age. “Oh.”
However, contrary to Kaveh’s expectations, Alhaitham appeared… pleased. No, that couldn’t be right, Kaveh decided. His ability to read Alhaitham dwindled over the years. After all, Alhaitham never looked pleased around him nowadays.

He thought of him often. How could he not when he was everywhere? The annotations left in dated research journals. The empty space sitting next to him at a bench built for two. The mirror when he stared at it for too long. He was inescapable, no matter how many years of distance accumulated between them.

But rarely was Kaveh honest with himself. I don’t miss him, he’d think while walking through the markets. It’s better this way, he’d tell himself when he’d hear his name in passing. I’ve moved on, he’d reassure his mirrored reflection when flashes of their fight invaded his mind.

Once his sober mind fell to intoxication, the lies crumbled. Truth was a greedy, attention-seeking little thing—he could only ignore it for so long before it came knocking on his door, demanding acknowledgment.

“Would it kill you to be thoughtful for once?” Kaveh pleaded as Alhaitham walked him to his room. “You know—” His voice caught in his throat. “You know how it’s been for me. Please. We were friends once. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”
They stopped under the doorway of Kaveh’s bedroom. Kaveh had one hand on the doorframe for support now that Alhaitham’s hands were off him. Through unfocused eyes, he looked at Alhaitham, begging for a crumb of leniency, of kindness, with his gaze.
“Friends,” Alhaitham echoed. His mouth curled around the word as if tasting it with bitter displeasure. “Funny. You only refer to us as friends when you want something.”

The archons must hear his pleas because Alhaitham stirs a moment later. He shifts around, winces, then blinks slowly until his eyes become accustomed to the dim environment. When his eyes land on him, his mouth parts, and “Kaveh?” comes out. “Kaveh,” he repeats, as if experimenting with how the word sounds from his lips.

Kaveh. Is that his name? Kaveh, he mouths. The syllables are foreign on his lips, but the name resonates with him regardless. Kaveh. Yes, that must be his name.

“Alhaitham,” he responds, unable to think of another thing to say. He watches Alhaitham undergo the same mental processing, mouthing his own name and all, as him.
