we could stop the runaway AI train immediately with legislation that makes companies strictly liable for whatever their AI does.

a district court in texas just decided that the National Firearms Act of 1934 is unconstitutional actually, because congress recently zeroed out the tax on most gun sales and the NFA was predicated on congress’ taxing power

i love emily wilson writing 4,000 words about how the new Odyssey movie is terrible then ending with “but at least maybe it will inspire some of you idiots to read Homer”
Despite all this, the release of The Odyssey is still an event to celebrate. In what we are told is the streaming era, this epic is bringing audiences back to cinemas. In what we are told is a time of declining literacy and the 'death of the humanities'.
', translations of The Odyssey, including mine, are flying off the shelves. Some of those who buy the book or show up in cinemas to watch Tom Holland may go on to study ancient Greek. Perhaps the film will persuade a few college administrators not to cut their literature, language and history departments. Nolan, who studied English at University College London - where students still study The Odyssey as a first year 'foundational text' - is doing his best to get the general public reading again, and Iam grateful.

the framers intended the court and congress to be coequal branches of government, each with its own scope of authority. the court has the authority to make all the laws and rules that apply to it or anyone else, and congress has the authority to go fuck itself

One key to the plan would be having Democrats in Richmond lower the mandatory retirement age for state Supreme Court justices, an idea that began circulating among state lawmakers and members of Congress after a column proposing a version of the idea was published on Friday night in The Downballot, a progressive newsletter.

a logic problem from our second drunkest cabinet member: “This fbi director has been on the job twice as many days as every director before me. What that means is I have taken half as many days off as those before me. What that means is I’ve taken a third less vacation than those before me.”

re-reading the federalist papers for a project and it's striking how many of our current problems can be traced back to the fact that the guys who designed our government just could not fathom a sociopathic president. hamilton on the why pardon power shouldn't be limited:
A passage from Federalist Paper No. 74: "The reflection that the fate of a fellow-creature depended on his sole fiat, would naturally inspire scrupulousness and caution; the dread of being accused of weakness or connivance."

dave troy pointed this out on twitter: in fiona hill’s testimony during the first trump indictment in 2019, she claimed russia was signaling that they wanted to make a strange swap of some kind - venezuela for ukraine s3.documentcloud.org/documents/65...

…This is, you know, March, April, into May, where we were having a standoff over Venezuela. And the Russians at this particular juncture were signaling very strongly that they wanted to somehow make some very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine.

In other words, if we were going to exert some semblance of the Monroe Doctrine of, you know, Russia keeping out of our backyard, because this is after the Russians had sent in these hundred operatives essentially to, you know, basically secure the Venezuelan Government and, you know, to preempt what they were obviously taking to be some kind of U.S. military action, they were basically signaling: You know, you have your Monroe doctrine. You want us out of your backyard. Well, you know, we have our own version of this.

You're in our backyard in Ukraine. And we were getting that sent to us, you know, kind of informally through channels. It was in the Russian press, various commentators.
