I think I just had my first AI email. It made me think… if this is by a human they need to learn to not write like AI or the recipient will assume it’s a scam. But if that’s the writing they’re encountering every day, why wouldn’t they write like that? Very sad.

This is the most important distinction imo. Like the software is not that exceptionally capable, it's the totally unhinged and inappropriate levels of trust people have placed in it that is really dangerous.

I’ve given up on reading physical books. Ebooks are easier bc I can make the txt white on a black background. And recently I realised graphic novels work too.

And apparently my phone’s camera liked the two together so much it got carried away with the colour saturation.

They look lovely together. I wonder, will there be a matching edition of The Magician’s Apprentice?

One of the first posts I made in Bluesky was of the French omnibus edition of the Black Magician Trilogy. Here is the sequel, the Traitor Spy Trilogy, with an equally magical cover.

Oh, very much this! If you paint (or draw) it’s fine to do it entirely for fun. First question people ask if they learn you write is “are you published?”. Which is probably why there’s such reluctance to call oneself ‘a writer’.

What an adventure this #Anthropicsettlement is. Five days of scurrying about hunting for contracts and photographing old printed ones, I sign back in to find my corrections are gone and I can’t upload anything. Are publishers having as much trouble with it?

One of my readers in #Australia accidentally got two print copies of CAULDRON BORNE, the 5th book of the #WalkerPapers. Does anybody need one? It's brand new and everything, and she's hoping she can find somebody local (ie, on the same continent) who'd like a copy. :)

Saddened to hear of the passing of #RussellKirkpatrick, New Zealand born fantasy writer and lovely guy. A geologist and cartographer, he made a map of his books’ world of exquisite detail and geological plausibility, that would unroll to span a room at con panels.

For a fiction author there can be no glory so great, no award so gleaming, no praise that so warms the heart, as unsolicited fan art

Let's be clear about something: any editor who runs an author's work through an "AI detector" is using the same technology they're supposedly trying to avoid. Furthermore, they're feeding that author's work -- w/o permission -- to the same companies that have probably already stolen earlier work.

We once were woken at 4am by a fire alert and announcement to stay in our room and be ready to leave. We dressed, packed and watched fire trucks arrive several floors below. Eventually message came it’s all fine. Back to sleep. At 5am the alarm clock went off.

Hmm. That’s a bit like saying you can have a moustache because they were popular in the past. Deckles are just one of a suite of book features that have come in and out of fashion.

Does my next novel have a fabulous cover that I can finally reveal to the world? WHY YES IT DOES THANK YOU FOR ASKING. To be released March 2026 and you can pre-order it here: www.harpercollins.com.au/978103892277...
The cover of 'What the Bones Know' by Kirstyn McDermott. The image is a green-tinged night scene of the front of a house seen at a distance through trees. One window shines with a yellow glow. In the foreground the ghostly, transparent figure of a young girl drifts close to the edge of frame. The title is printed in large red capital letters, taking up almost the entire cover, and wavering as though viewed underwater. The tagline reads, "Sometimes what is buried does not stay buried".
