#OTD in 1899, 30,000 men marched through a triumphal arch in New York for Admiral Dewey. Governor Roosevelt rode at the head of the state troops. The arch was plaster over wood. The marble version was never funded, and it came down in 1900. trlibrary.com/tr/rise-to-power/governor

#OTD in 1906, 120 years ago today, TR signed Proclamation 658 and made Devils Tower the first national monument in the country — 1,152.91 acres, fifteen weeks after the Antiquities Act became law. Most maps had called it Bear Lodge for fifty years. trlibrary.com/tr/conservation
