Today, I contemplated how common plantain looks quite amazing when it gets to grow. We’ve actually transplanted some into our yard. It’s a useful plant but it’s typically mowed down, pulled out, or worse.

I assumed this would be a retro gimmick that I tried once. Then I loaded up my subs and I found I genuinely like it. I just dropped in to a video from Wood by Wright and sat through the whole thing. Is this about the paradox of choice or just a fun format? channelsurfer.tv

Look at this lovely grain. I joined a guild with a community shop 45 minutes away. Today, I resawed these small Koa boards there with a bandsaw. I’m a hand tool shop, but there are times when I want to use a bandsaw. I love the idea of community-shared equipment, and not just for woodworking.

I had an old regular shooting board I wasn’t using so I made a donkey’s ear attachment to shoot long 45 degree miters. I wanted something fast to build and precise, so I mounted the board on two cheap plastic rafter squares. It’s not pretty, but works great and completed it in about an hour.

Beautiful spot where Beaver Creek meets Antietam Creek in Washington County, Maryland. Fishing wasn’t good, but the scenery was great. Normally at this time of year, the water levels are a couple of feet higher. Like much of the country, we are in drought conditions in the spring. Not great.

Recently returned from a trip to Western Maryland, where we stayed in one of the few mid-Atlantic spots with no cell service (look, a phone booth!). The fishing was excellent, but the water levels are way too low for April.

I finally got around to gutting and cleaning up this old, broken German radio. Now it has a HomePod inside. I use the iMac next to it to hold an iPad, so now I have a fun setup in the shop for streaming music. The tube radio parts I removed are fascinating.

My wife shot this image of a golden eagle this morning using her iPhone while we were out near Gathland State Park in Maryland. I think it’s an impressive image given the equipment. The most impressive part was the proximity of the eagle, who couldn’t care less that we were so close.

I’ve listened to Fela Kuti for several decades in total ignorance of his story. Highly recommend this podcast series, I learned so much: Fela Kuti: Fear No Man 🎵
art19.com
Fela Kuti: Fear No Man
In a world that’s on fire, what is the role of art? What can music actually…do? Can a song save a life? Change a law? Topple a president? Get you killed? In Fela Kuti: Fear No Man, Jad Abumrad—creator of Radiolab, More Perfect, and Dolly Parton's America—tells the story of one of the great political awakenings in music: how a classically trained 'colonial boy' traveled to America, in search of Africa, only to return to Nigeria and transform his sound into a battering ram against the state—creating a new musical language of resistance called Afrobeat. For years, the world’s biggest stars made pilgrimages to Nigeria to experience Fela’s Shrine, the epicenter of his musical revolution. But when the mix of art and activism got too hot, the state pulled out its guns, and literally opened fire. Fela Kuti: Fear No Man is an uncategorizable mix of oral history, musicology, deep dive journalism, and cutting edge sound design that takes listeners deep inside Fela’s life, music, and legacy. Drawing from over 200 interviews with Fela Kuti’s family, friends, as well as scholars, activists, and luminaries like Burna Boy, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Santigold, and former President Barack Obama (just to name a few), Fela Kuti: Fear No Man journeys deep into the soul of Afrobeat to explore the transformative power of art and the role artists can play in this current moment of global unrest. I’m trying Asahi Linux on an M1 Macbook Air and it’s great, except that the battery continues to drain A LOT during sleep. That’s not so great. In comparison, I have a 2009 Macbook Pro running Peppermint OS that is also great with a battery in sleep that lasts for months.

All is on hold this month as I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and now recovering. I did not see a tick, nor did I have a telltale bite mark. I thought I had the flu, then joint pain began. If I can offer any advice, it’s to be vigilant and take precautions to avoid this.
