The TBA alumni community has grown! Our students arrived a month ago from 18 countries. They have learned together, challenged ideas, and shared plenty of experiences along the way. They leave with new skills and confidence that will set them up for a successful career in ecology and conservation.

Our budding ecologists are applying the skills they’ve developed over the past two weeks to answer research questions of their own, navigating the realities of field research and collaboration. This transition from guided learning to independent enquiry is where everything comes together.

TBA field courses allow students to learn first hand about the social and ecological realities of conservation. Today, we left Kibale Forest to visit Bigodi wetlands to see how community-based conservation is helping to protect biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods. #TropicalBiology

Our first days on the course have given students first-hand experience of carrying out field research on butterflies and frogs and learning to use bioacoustic techniques. These projects have encouraged participants to be curious, ask good research questions, and test their ideas with data.

The course may be ending, but the work is just beginning. From strengthening proposals to testing new restoration approaches, we look forward to seeing how the ideas gained from the course take root across landscapes in the 12 countries where these alumni work. #DarwinInitiative #ForestRestoration

Restoration is more than planting trees. Our participants learned what successful restoration looks like on the ground at the FACE the Future project. Key to the success was community engagement, a long-term monitoring plan, and adaptive management.

How can technology better support biodiversity conservation in East Africa? Day 1 focused on tools in action, and the pathway from “data-to-impact”. Key takeaway: monitoring technology works best when the data are accessible, supported by skills, linked to the local context.
