Close your eyes and remember a time when the computer was seen as a shining gateway to knowledge—this is the sound of trndytrndy. Their 2024 EP ‘Virtua’ is a masterwork in the medium of Utopian Virtual: a genre that reclaims the aesthetics of “tacky” pre-millenium corporate muzak; the general MIDI counterpart to vaporwave’s sample archeology. trndytrndy borrows the limited ROMpler palette of 90s edu-tainment jingles (think Animusic, Eyewitness, and The Weather Channel) to whisk you through the endless possibilities of the imminent computer revolution.
‘Channel Surfing’ captures that optimism on an elemental level: while ’Virtua’ sticks to the script with original tools of the era (Roland JV-1080, D-50, Korg Wavestation, Triton, etc.), this pack takes scientific care to recreate that feeling inside modern engines like Serum 2 and Phase Plant. The presets give fluid control over formerly static sounds, while the audio & MIDI melodies breeze through time with the new-age ease of the worldwide web: it feels like someone speaking a lost language with native fluency. Swung drum grooves and gated snares recall new jack swing through the lens of an afterschool special. ‘Channel Surfing’ rides the wave from the late 90s Utopian Scholastic all the way into the new millennium, with lush pads and airy synth arpeggios that feel like browsing the Wii menu or booting up the family computer. Dorling Kindersley MIDI jams meet Frutiger Aero skeuomorphism in a hopeful channel guide for society if…

interesting find: apparently wav files exported from ableton have a hidden easter eggs in the headers of the files

header of a wav file viewed in a text editor with a string that says "Why r u using a hex editor?"

header of a wav file viewed in a text editor with a string that says "Fear is the mind-killer"

header of a wav file viewed in a text editor with a string that says "We are the dreamers o dreams"

header of a wav file viewed in a text editor with a string that says "Angry ppl r not always wise"

POV: you have to go to the conference room half way through your 8 and a half hour shift to watch the mandatory annual Who We Are corporate review video (complete with awkward transition into sky full of stars by coldplay)
