TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 12/05/2026Remade the entire table with almost exclusively Linear A glyphs, which are undeciphered. I chose the vowels, q (the "lh" sound", and a couple of other.glyphs manually, but the rest I just randomized for my sanity. Also many a google sheets converter. A few words: 120
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026And so I wasted a morning. This is an alternative way to write Jolasin aka the angel language from AWWG. Mariko – 𐀔𐀪𐀃 Shiina – 𐁖𐀂𐀙 (sounds are Xiina) Hikari – 𐁁𐀏𐀪 Jolasin – 𐀍𐁈𐀯𐄸 The syllabary sounds are fairly arbitrary, but a good chunk are based on the real Linear B sounds. 110
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 01/05/2026I've noticed I've been watching YouTube less and less. Maybe I'm just saturated, but I dunno, it feels just kinda like every channel is the same and that I can't trust them to not have an agenda. 110
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 24/04/2026I was wondering to myself what other songs from the GBA I could work on for Project Atlantis other than Pokémon and Mario Kart... But then I remembered the *perfect* song I have arranged before and always regretted not doing more because of the GB limitations. The hint is GS (not Gold/Silver) 🤭 020

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 19/04/2026It's incredibly frustrating how much louder the VSU noise channel is compared to the DMG. I'm running the VSU at volume *3* and it's still about the same loudness as the DMG on max (15). This is mostly because the sound is way more "grating" so it stands out way more than the DMG's. 000

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 15/04/2026This is a pretty interesting question that I had to ponder a lot for my stories involving magic. In Project Dungeon magic comes from physical mana crystals and I wanted it to be feel like an alien substance, so I chose blue. In Hellspawn, there are 7 magic elements and each has its own color! 120

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 14/04/2026New theory for what causes my migraines: they are triggered whenever my brain requires more energy. When I'm working a lot, playing games (seeing images flashing around), or simply because I haven't eaten in a while. And I have some metabolic issue that prevents me from tapping into energy reserves. 110
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 11/04/2026I was struggling with the wave volume on Project Atlantis' VSU and decided to manually measure the ratio between a pulse at max volume in the VSU vs DMG. A constant that pops out, even by roughly measuring pixel values in a screenshot—about 2.678. But this can't be random, right? So I dug deeper. 110
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 10/04/2026A bunch of my online friends around my age or younger seem to be going through this sort of nihilism where the world feels so shitty that no one really has any motivation to do anything productive. How long will it take until someone in power to notice and do anything about this? Probably never. 130
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 10/04/2026Something I've discovered from testing: the VSU waves don't have 4 times the resolution; they are literally 4 times as tall and thus 4 times as loud. This means that they completely drown out the GB waves if I'm not careful. In a real system, it's likely there would be some master audio switch tho. 000
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 09/04/2026The instrument I'm talking about is this one on the wave channel during the main part of this song, for example.youtu.beCipher Peon Battle [8-bit GameBoy] | Pokémon ColosseumYouTube video by TriteHexagon 010
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 08/04/2026Something I've noticed with chiptune is that it tends to sound better and more vibrant with artificial waves, rather than waves directly sampled from real instruments. It's also the reason why pulse channels are so iconic and "neutral". Problem is, I'm still very much a noob when it comes to this 😅 120
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 06/04/2026This indeed the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life. I could just make up—sorry, silicon sample—a study that 100% of people surveyed think I should be King of the World, and it has as much validity as this utter nonsense. 000
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 06/04/2026Okay, I was slightly wrong. FM synthesis is done *per* wavecycle instead of being an effect done per note. The difference is the scale—vibrato is "macro-scale" while FM is "micro-scale". In other news, foobar's VB plugin does not accurately reproduce the VSU's FM modulation 😖 110
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 06/04/2026Wait a fricking second. So FM synthesis is basically just the same thing as applying a looping frequency macro? I thought this was some highbrow technique, but you can *technically* just do this on any old system. All this talk about carrier waves and modulation and you can just do this in software. 010
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 06/04/2026Aww, darn it. I can't actually do it without going through some hoops. I only have 5 waves on the VSU and I'm using all of them. That said, I could maybe go the ORAS route and just reuse the main lead instrument for the final Part instead of doing the organ (I don't like how it sounds atm anyways). 020

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 03/04/2026I've discovered that the Virtual Boy waves' metallic tinge can be effectively masked after all channels are mixed together. Meaning that it's way better to do the bass, harmony, and percussion first, and only then touch on the melody. 010

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 31/03/2026I wonder why people not that excited about my VSU+DMG project. Is because everyone thinks arranging for 10 (or 8) channels is easier? (it's not). Is it because no one cares about the Virtual Boy? Is it just nostalgia for the GameBoy? Or is my idea fundamentally silly? 110

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 27/03/2026I don't know how I never noticed this, but the Pokémon Crystal title screen theme is identical to the GS one, except they cut the short intro section from Crystal for some reason. 000

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 25/03/2026Actually, the consequences of this for the Pokémon timeline are far more widespread than I initially thought. The original GameBoy Red&Green would probably remain Japan-exclusive (like Stadium "0"), with GF making Blue as a "quick and dirty" port to launch Atlantis in the West in 1998. 100
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 24/03/2026The year is 1995. The GameBoy is on its last legs—Pokémon is but a twinkle in the eyes of Satoshi Tajiri. Virtual Boy still failed, but Yokoi didn't leave Nintendo and isn't tragically killed. Instead, the VB team was folded into Project Atlantis, the GB's successor. 100
TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 24/03/2026I can’t believe I'm writing alternate history scenarios in my head where Gunpei Yokoi didn't leave Nintendo and Project Atlantis, the precurssor to the GBA, released in 1998, packaged with the VSU + GB chip 😅 110

TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 24/03/2026Wondering if I should pursue the VSU + DMG angle or if I should also explore a double DMG format... after all, now that I can just compile vgm files from scratch having two DMG chips is easy enough to do. TriteHexagon @tritehexagon.bsky.social · 23/03/2026If there's one thing that distinguishes my chiptune arrangements from music composed by actual musicians is my relative aversion to using volume envelopes with very steep decays.
