Becoming increasingly apparent that all the actual game developers left Unity a while ago

You can no longer disable slackbot from showing up in the right-hand navigation bar #enshittification
A screenshot of Slack’s navigation preferences panel, showing that the checkbox for hiding the Slackbot is now greyed-out and innacesible

Hilariously, underwater datacentres are old hat

Microsoft finds underwater datacenters are reliable, practical and use energy sustainably - Source
Microsoft retrieved the Northern Isles underwater datacenter from the seafloor off Scotland's Orkney Islands. Project Natick is proving the concept of underwater datacenters is feasible as well as logistically, environmentally and economically practical.

I've generally heard it applied to any rotational hand tool as well. Something like a hand-held grinder or a circular saw still has plenty of rotational energy to cause you harm. That said, the hand that's actually gripping the body of the tool is pretty low risk

I tried something like this when the first iPad mini came out, the tech just wasn't quite there at the time. Of course, the current Pro Max iphone has nearly reached the screen dimensions of that OG mini 😅

The security vendor who blindly installs untrusted packages onto machines with prod credentials is the real WTF here…

Breaking the whole list down by type of AI use is bonkers

I feel like it was a ZIRP phenomenon. Obviously the AI booster crowd has some overlap, but the balkanisation of twitter and LLMs helping idea guys self-actualise seems to have moved most of them out of orbits I inhabit 🤷‍♀️

Genderedness mostly just a reflection of demographics - women techbros certainly existed, just in much fewer numbers

The image in my mind is the shirt-sleeved idea guy types that were running around Bay Area startups in the 2010s. Mostly not the actual engineers. Very closely related to the investment bros they hung out with

100% an ad, even if portions of it may be factual. This whole "it takes an AI to stop an AI" thing is classic security firm grift

There's probably at least a wood-fired range in the kitchen? Traditional to all huddle around the one fireplace all winter. Joists don't look too bad compared to equivalent rooves I've seen here in Spain 😅

The downside, of course, is finding out you haven't maintained a large group of gaming friends with compatible schedules as an adult 🔥

We're in a transition phase where the only online games worth playing are the ones where you play with a group of actual friends, with no way for randoms to chat with you. And a whole genre of games like Peak and Big Walk have sprung up around this…

Despite watching way too much vertical scroll, I know maybe 3 of these. I have a feeling there is a generational/curational cliff that causes the platforms not to feed me most of these

The 90's called, and they'd like their benchmark back
Up to 2.3x faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel when compared to Mac mini with M1, and up to 1.5x faster than M4.

The gap I always wonder about in this sort of analysis, is what is the exponential growth supposed to be accomplishing? The existing economy can already equip everyone on the planet with a smartphone… how much space for growth is actually there

Gmail's little LLM-powered writing suggestions are the bane of my existence, and I can't find a setting that reliably disables them. Let me be overly-wordy in peace, goddamnit

I've had this idea in the back of my head for a long time, to procgen the actual game mechanics themselves, so that no two players can play in exactly the same way, and everyone has to learn their ruleset by experimentation…

I tend to think the flip side of this is that a lot of people who could, research themselves out of it. Sheer gumption is a pretty effective way to live an interesting life

This is exactly how I got my tiny rural village in Spain connected to fibre. Just kept accepting fibre offers from the sales people, and about the 5th installer who showed up finally had enough juice to get the big truck rolling out…
