Rudyard Kipling's defines basic principles of social co-operation in his poem: ‘the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack’. Was he right, or is the natural world the scene of unrestrained competition, of an individualistic struggle for existence? 🐺🐾

124 years ago today, Sir Karl Raimund Popper was born. 🎂🎉 The philosopher of science served on TRIP's council during the 1950s. One of his most notable ideas is the rule of falsifiability: a statement or theory is scientific if it can be proven wrong by empirical observation or testing.

👀 We normally infer consciousness in others by observing behaviour similar to our own. AI complicates this, because it can produce the behaviour without the similarity that usually grounds the inference. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!🎤
100
The Royal Institute of Philosophy @triphilosophy.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
🧠 Philosophers disagree on what consciousness requires. Some argue it depends on the physical material a system is made of. Others argue what matters is function, not substrate, so the right kind of information processing could give rise to consciousness regardless of what it runs on.

The Royal Institute of Philosophy @triphilosophy.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Could a computer ever actually be conscious, or would it just be simulating consciousness?🤖 Some AI systems can now produce outward signs of thought and even distress. But producing the signs of a mental state is not the same as having one. [cont]

The unity of time is a different matter entirely. Any experience that belongs to a person must in principle be rememberable by that person, and anything rememberable is already located within a single temporal sequence. Multiple times are not just unlikely but unintelligible.

The Royal Institute of Philosophy @triphilosophy.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The unity of space, he argues, is a contingent truth. There is no logical contradiction in the idea of multiple disconnected spaces, and he thinks we can describe circumstances in which we would have good reason to believe in more than one.

Kant argued that all real things must be locatable within a single, all-encompassing space and a single, all-encompassing time. Quinton accepts that this is how we do in fact think, but asks whether it is how we must think.
