I can't even leave my goddamn house without almost tripping over AI.

I don't know if it's still going on but for a while this shitty data center nobody wants was running a public sentiment campaign masquerading as a social justice thing in my area, and sending people door to door to spread misinformation. One of them literally passed out on my porch.

I just want a global toggle for "keep generative AI fucking away from me forever and ever amen".

I resent that I'm going to need to do research to try and find a fitness tracker that has the features I want and DOESN'T use AI, and I resent even more that there's no guarantee it will not suddenly start using AI too.

Every time I see a cute/interesting video or picture ... I feel like I have to do research to make sure it's not AI. I have a FitBit, and when I got it there was nothing generative AI about it. Now I get messages from an AI health coach that I do not want twice a day.

One of the many things I hate about AI is the amount of MY TIME AND ENERGY it takes to avoid it.

Jowls for days.

I was afraid of the basement in the house I grew up in. My dad, with very dad logic, thought it would help (?!) to make up a basement monster and then try to make said monster humorous somehow. It backfired spectacularly and my mom was NOT amused.

If a comb I loved came along, I'd just have to learn how they work!

Ditto on: Shawl pins/clips. I'm a knitter and shawls are my favorite thing to make. I don't have any shawl pins yet, though! Hair stuff. Got the long locks and basically just wear them loose all the time, but have been wanting to start using hair sticks or other accoutrements.

I kinda figured! You would basically just make yourself a private mosquito nursery if you tried.

There HAS to be a "Your Own Personal Jesus" joke here, but I just can't find it.

Do they ... Even have basements that aren't above ground? I live in a monsoon climate and I've never seen a house with a basement here. We have sheds in the backyards instead. 😆 Threw me at first, since basements were ubiquitous where I grew up.

It wasn't the first thing to really scare me, that was Big Bird Goes to Japan. But the most memorable is the absolute fever dream that is ... Well. Really the entirety of The Adventures of Mark Twain. But especially the part where they meet Satan.

Bless you. I made myself get in the shower so I wouldn't claim this and I'm not sure I could have helped myself if it was still available when I got out. XD

If you get a whole big set, Tombows are the expensive. I haven't done that. Instead I've just been slowly acquiring some of the smaller pallet sets that have like 10 markers.

I just realized I have pictures of my test pages. These are Poscas.
A bunch of colored circles in a sketchbook made with Posca pens.

The first time I used my Posca pens I had no idea what to expect, I'd never used anything like them before. I followed the directions that said to prime them by pressing the tip down against the paper. I did this in a small sketchbook on my bed with no paper towels in range. 😆

I haven't used them for coloring in a coloring book so not sure how they are for that, but I'm pretty obsessed with Tombow brush pens.

(I am assuming this is true of the knockoffs as well.)

Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Poscas are really awesome color but they are a little scary to use, sometimes there is just so much paint. 😆 Just make sure you prime them on a paper towel ... Or at least have a paper towel handy.

These people are really missing out, because even when country lyrics are lacking, it is really fucking fun to sing.

In your defense the moon here can be REALLY bright. I once thought some terrible stellar disaster was happening because the moon was so bright and big and I was like ... That hasn't always been like that, right?!

I'm a human being, hiring another human being. If whatever happens during the interview could happen to me, I'm not going to judge it. And I wouldn't want to work anywhere that did have such bizarre "inappropriate interview behavior" rules. Wear clothes, don't be drunk, don't be belligerent. 😆

Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
For what it's worth ... I've been on hiring committees numerous times and I never once disapproved of any candidate based on what they were or were not drinking, or what color they were wearing, etc. never heard anyone else on a committee mention that kind of thing either.

You'd think, right?! Since binding off in pattern is such a thing. I suppose someone must have figured it out by now, but apparently it's such a massive pain in the ass no one wants to do it?

You're definitely not alone in your frustration over trying to go from crochet to knit. I *can* crochet, but I feel the same about it. I'm not as fast and it doesn't look as good because of inexperience so it's hard to motivate myself to fix the inexperience problem. :)

It's also pretty normal for stitches to look a little wonky the first few rows, particularly with ribbing because to my knowledge you can't cast on "in pattern" with ribbing. If you can it must be really advanced because I've never seen it. 😆

Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I have only used straight needles once. I just find them unwieldy and easy to lose. It also cuts the number of needles you need in half, because you just use circulars of the given size for everything, flat or in the round. :) Also your stitches look good for learning!

Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I am an advanced knitter. I started on circulars and I still use them for everything except for small things that need DPNs. I think they're easier to work with, and easier to store and keep track of. (Magic loop is a thing that would let me use circulars for small circumferences but I hate it. 😆)

I had a personal grudge about that book in particular that I'd forgotten till now. I was a kid who did really well in school and that was the first thing I absolutely fuckin refused to do work on. I do not remember why. 😆

Part of the bat thing was "Oh... I am definitely going to hear about this again at work." ... Both times.

Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Funnily enough ... When the bat thing happened, the wildlife rehab center was a volunteer gig. In my day job, I was an infectious disease epidemiologist for the state health department. And we had a whole meeting at the end of every day for "You're never gonna believe this."

I believe in overlap between "toxic sports parent" and "toxic transphobic parent" ... it's just a weird stretch in my brain to do "toxic sports parent", "toxic transphobic parent" and "parent who desperately wants their child to go to college and thinks sports is the only way."
150
Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The argument "Trans kids are ruining my child's chance at SPORTS SUPER STARDOM" is laughable enough, "Trans kids are ruining my kid's COLLEGE DREAMS" takes it a step farther. It smacks of "I have at least enough awareness to know people are going to laugh at me if I say my kid is a sports prodigy."
1111
Trick of the light @trickofthelight.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
That makes sense. I just have a hard time believing any of these parents actually think sports is their child's ONLY ROUTE to college, you know? You can be deluded into thinking your kid is the next Steve Nash without believing they have no prayer in college any other way.

I was worried about the accessibility and affordability of college education, and the ripple effects of that leading to extremely homogenous groups of people making decisions for everyone. So I got a job with a nonprofit that does college access and success work.
