Looked down at my phone and it was busily transcribing the dialogue from a series I’m watching. It was the murderer’s confession, about to be sent via text to @profchander.bsky.social I don’t have an alibi!

I’m thinking about all of this today especially because it’s the 10th anniversary of my mom’s passing.

But I know that this next book (still in progress) emerged from the community I found with this book. There is NO PATH to the questions it proposes without the Black folks I’ve met these last ten years.

Tricia Matthew @triciamatthew.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The book connected me to **remarkable**thinkers of color, and those connections helped me navigate my own institutional challenges. There are always people ready to tell me it doesn’t “count” (it’s an edited volume, it’s not in my field). Maybe they are right, institutionally.

I’ve tried to channel the best of what I’ve learned into building a community with the Race and Regency Lab, a space where we can reflect on complex issues free from institutional obstacles. It is more work than talks or workshops, but the possibilities for meaningful disruptions feel very real.

Tricia Matthew @triciamatthew.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The work that felt most meaningful was almost always the private lunches (I pushed hard for those) I had with faculty of color. I also was invited to do serve as an external reviewer for a department that felt RICH with promise. It went beyond talks and into departmental history and structure.

Tricia Matthew @triciamatthew.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I learned invaluable lessons in the talks and workshops I was part of. Many of those lessons came from women of color. I also saw first hand, across the country, how institutional resistance operates. I worried a lot about providing cover for disingenuous academic leaders.

Tricia Matthew @triciamatthew.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It put my career on a completely different path than the one I planned. And A LOT of people thought I would become a DEI administrator. That was never my goal. But I am glad that it has positioned me to help academics of color, sometimes taking TO/WITH them and sometimes speaking on their behalf.

I found a community among academics of color, especially Black women. Those friendships and new role models about how to be ethically academic sustained me. I also found deeply committed allies among white academics. I value those relationships.

My copies were waiting for me in Brooklyn when I got back from her memorial service. I was so crushed I couldn’t really process that it was out. But the reaction was so overwhelming positive and the invitations to share what I learned helped keep me from going completely under. I mean that.

This autumn is the 10th anniversary of the publication of Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure. It came out during a heartbreaking time, my mom’s passing. I worked on copy edits and proofs from her living room, between medical appointments. uncpress.org/978146962771...

Celeste-Marie Bernier presents the first standalone biography of Anna Murray Douglass, wife and co-revolutionary of Frederick Douglass, honoring her history-making role as a campaigner, liberator, and freedom-fighter. Read a sample for free now: buff.ly/4etAj6v

Yes. When we talked about it they patiently explained to me how figurative language functions. (I think they ended up with a B on the essay)
