I haven’t been able to attend the Lucas Museum (yet!) but this catalogue was absolutely STUNNING, and if the work within is any indication the experience in the museum will be something truly special. Not to be cliche BUT… this has made a fine addition to my collection… @lucasmuseum.bsky.social

Tony Gilroy had stated how he wanted Andor to focus on forgotten people who make a revolution happen, Alexander Freed continued this ethos with The Mask Of Fear, and Rebecca masterfully follows up these themes in EDGE OF THE ABYSS.

Star Wars: EDGE OF THE ABYSS by @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social is almost here! Check out my review!! With EDGE OF THE ABYSS, Rebecca has crafted a story enveloped in the darkness of the Empire, but at it’s core is also a story of duty, truth, and most of all love. (1/?)
"The man's an ox! Slow! And stupid!" exclaimed Saw Guerrera about Anto Kreegyr in ANDOR Season 1. This is one of the great things about Star Wars; little lines of dialogue that hint and at a larger world of people and events that could potentially be explored in the future. With EDGE OF THE ABYSS (the second book of the Reign Of The Empire trilogy) Rebecca Roanhorse fulfills that promise (and then some).
As a big fan of Alexander Freed’s The Mask Of Fear (and his writing in general), I had some concerns about tonal consistency with this book being written by a different author. but Rebecca Roanhorse has skillfully continued the story and any tonal worries are laid to rest. While reading this book I could quite clearly hear Saw Gerrera’s, Mon Mothma’s, and Bail Organa’s voices as I imagined an almost lost-arc from Andor. Structurally, this is a reason why EDGE OF THE ABYSS succeeds, it functions like a self contained arc, as opposed to a direct continuation to The Mask Of Fear. It tells it’s own story without having to maintain a strict continuity, much like an arc in The Clone Wars or arcs in Andor Season 2.
If The Mask Of Fear is a Mon Mothma-adjacent story, EDGE OF THE ABYSS is a Saw Gerrera-adjacent narrative. We follow multiple parallel stories: those of Karama, an old agent of Saw’s, Chemish, an Imperial intelligence operative, and Anto Kryger, a man who seeks a way to meaningfully fight the Empire.	Much like Andor, EDGE OF THE ABYSS (and The Mask Of Fear before it) leans heavily into the spy/political thriller side of Star Wars. As such, all the characters and plot lines tangle and weave into each other as character motivations are unraveled. The book orbits around the previously mentioned characters alongside a slew of returning and familiar faces: Perrin, Leida, Kleya, Luthen, and Leia. Rebecca masterfully brings all these characters to life in a way that feels authentic to all their characterizations. She develops pairings among some of them, which makes for wonderful interactions that both anchor and deepen their portrayals. Some of these characters' introductions and meetings were an absolute joy to read.
Another return from Andor is Ghorman. A pivotal planet that is a character unto itself, the setting and plot in Ghorman is presented from a different perspective than what we had seen in the series, but helps ground that narrative and increases the pressure building to the tragedy of it all since we know how everything culminates.
Rebecca has crafted a compelling story and a great follow-up in this Reign Of The Empire trilogy, one which explored not just the darkness of the Imperial era and a time without the Jedi, but which also explores the insidious nature of the Empire and how it’s tendrils slip into day-to-day life to corrupt not just the obvious parts of society, but also the most vulnerable.	With EDGE OF THE ABYSS, Rebecca Roanhorse has crafted a story enveloped in the darkness of the Empire, but at it’s core is also a story of duty, truth, and most of all love. Tony Gilroy had stated how he wanted Andor to focus on forgotten people who make a revolution happen, Alexander Freed continued this ethos with The Mask Of Fear, and Rebecca masterfully follows up these themes in EDGE OF THE ABYSS. She further deepens our understanding of so many characters we have grown to love in an intricately woven fabric that is a satisfying read and ends in a compelling and exciting way, opening the door for Fran Wilde to bring the trilogy to a close with From The Ashes. Rebellions are built on hope.

Below my review of 'Star Wars: LEGACY' by Madeleine Roux: Much like the Skywalker lightsaber, the weight of the heirloom and the legacy of Star Wars in a meta-sense, shackle the story into something that is neither intimate nor expansive enough. (1/?)
At the end of The Last Jedi, Rey asks: “how do we build a Rebellion from this?” to which Leia responds, “We have everything we need.”
Claudia Gray’s Master & Apprentice and Mike Chen’s Brotherhood work as a sort-of duology; fascinating stories about the relationship between a pupil and their teacher. Now, Madeleine Roux makes this a spiritual trilogy with her upcoming LEGACY. Since the culmination of the Skywalker Saga, stories about Rey and the Sequel Trilogy era have been few and far between, so the expectations for this book have been high.
Rey’s character has always been compelling and Leia is legendary, so an exploration of their relationship between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise Of Skywalker was full of potential. How does Rey continue her Jedi journey after the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, has become one with the Force? How does Leia become a Jedi mentor when she abandoned her Jedi training to dedicate herself to a life of a General in the Resistance?
Unfortunately the answers this book gives us are lackluster despite some strong writing from Madeleine. The characterizations’ of our heroines’ more often than not seem out of place considering where they were at the end of Episode VIII and the start of Episode IX.	Caught between the main plot, are the stories of Gav and Ziff, freedom fighters from Hays Minor, and Major Brilla Wostenholme of the First Order, whom they are trying to eliminate. Most of the issues in the book have to do with this plot; it never quite coalesces with Rey and Leia’s, and in a lot of ways fails to justify why they connect with each other and how they uncermoniously converge their conflict.
LEGACY seems caught between two good stories: Leia/Rey, and Gav/Ziff/Brilla. The consequence of which is that none of these threads are explored in a satisfying way that offers catharsis to anyone’s journey. The book seems plagued by Lucasfilm’s treatment of the Sequel Trilogy: an uncertainty of where to take it’s narrative and what to do with legacy characters.
The book takes it’s time with the character arcs for Rey and Leia, setting them up interestingly in an ancient temple on Tython (cool Jedi: Fallen Order/Survivor vibes), yet despite this build-up, the apotheosis doesn’t take us to anywhere we haven’t seen before. Similarly, the crescendo of the plot develops slowly yet once we reach the climax it arrives too late and is resolved too quickly.	Nevertheless, LEGACY has interesting things to say, especially when it comes to duty, honor, service, empathy, acceptance, and of course legacy; framed through a triad of sorts between Leia, Rey, and Brilla. There are wonderful moments to frame these themes and anchored by surprising character appearances.
Much like the Skywalker lightsaber, the weight of the heirloom and the legacy of Star Wars in a meta-sense, shackle the story into something that is neither intimate nor expansive enough. Connecting pieces from VIII to IX (to soften dissonance between films?), and pointing at both things past and future, the book unfortunately fails to create a compelling continuation of Rey and Leia’s mythos, despite some deeply interesting concepts that never quite come together. Despite this, I look forward to more Star Wars stories from Madeline and more adventures of Rey Skywalker.

The ART Of ANDOR reminds us that films & TV aren’t made by a showrunner; they are made by creatives, sharing their passion of art, sharing their MANIA, to create art that transcends the page & becomes something special that changes the way we see the potential of the stories we engage with (1/3)
There are a plethora of The ART Of STAR WARS books, and all of them are a wonderful journey into the behind-the-scenes process that generated the incredible scenes, props, and multitudes of designs that are signature to Star Wars. A fascinating look at both the art that made it into series and films, and other work that didn’t make the cut. Phil Szostak has led our journey through many of these books, and he continues his masterful series with The ART Of STAR WARS: ANDOR.
It should be no surprise that a series as visually rich, layered, and immersive as ANDOR would have equally impressive production art, and it is no understatement to say that this ART Of book deliveres in spades. This book is a TOME, encompassing both seasons of the show, a complete artistic retrospective which masterfully documents the incredible work of so many artists and designers.
If this were only a collection of artwork, it would be great as it was, but as usual Phil loads the book with an incredible amount of interviews with the cast and crew, from Tony Gilroy to Diego Luna, from Michael Wilkinson to Luke Hull and beyond (special shoutout to Barry “Baz” Gingell). These interviews, masterfully conducted and curated by Phil, give an already layered series an additional depth that begs us to study each page intently and inspire a rewatch of the show to appreciate the “mania” of all involved.ANDOR reminded us that the fight against the Empire and fascism isn’t won by a single Jedi and his family; it is won by a group of people sacrificing everything for what is right. In the same way The ART Of STAR WARS: ANDOR reminds us that films and TV series aren’t made by a showrunner and it’s star; they are made by groups of creatives, sharing in their passion of art, design, and Star Wars, sharing in their MANIA, to create art that transcends the page and becomes something special that changes the way we see the potential of the stories we engage with.
The same way that Tony Gilroy presented us a series that asked us to take it seriously, engage with it, and dissect every inch of the screen, so too does Phil Szostak presents us a book that is layered and allows for whatever engagement you seek from it, be it a visual companion filled with beautiful art, a study of the behind-the-scenes processes, or an in-depth companion piece to a layered show which showcases the power of an idea, and the collective effort to design, and design, and design, until somehow it becomes a story of Rebellion.

My review for #THEMANDALORIANANDGROGU is below! Ultimately, it's a film that plays it safe, but has a lot of heart for the father-son-duo we’ve all grown to love. With entertaining action sequences and a thrilling score, it’s a film that wants us to love it as much as we love Grogu. 💚💚💚/5
Seven years since The Rise Of Skywalker, the first Star Wars theatrical release is here with THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU! How does the return of Din Djarin and Grogu (and ultimately Star Wars) on the big screen fare? Unfortunately, Mando and Grogu’s journey to cinemas is not triumphant, despite being earnest.
In a time where streaming and the theatrical experience seem fraught, any direction Star Wars could take in response would always be fascinating. Following The Rise Of Skywalker or The Acolyte dividing opinions among some in the fandom, what would the return of Star Wars to cinemas be? It seems this return heralds an echo to tRoS: safe appeasement.
When The Mandalorian S1 premiered, it gathered universal acclaim among fandom, and everyone and their mom knew who “Baby Yoda” was. The series eventually grew the mythos of Din Djarin, Grogu, Mandalore, and the Galaxy at large setting up a “Mandoverse” that seemed as ambitious as the MCU. After S3 concluded in 2023, we all wondered where Mando and Grogu’s story would continue. For better or worse, Filoni and Favreau’s response is: nowhere. With Din Djarin’s (a name never uttered in the film) Heroes Journey concluded, it seems so is the “Mandoverse”.
This film is a “back to basics” adventure, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but also offers nothing new.	Where The Mandalorian offered intriguing themes about diaspora and religious fanatiscim, mysteries connecting the Imperial Remnant to Thrawn and Palpatine’s eventual return, this film offers little to further Din’s journey or Grogu’s.
The creature-feature that this film is, while spectacular, also feels like we’re being begged to remember Jabba The Hutt, the Dejarik creatures, or any of the previous Star Wars characters we’ve seen. Every Star Wars movie has given us something we haven’t seen before, this film is content providing the familiarity of comfort.
The nature of this film begs us to recall and remember the series, but where we’ve previously had adventures that felt expansive with the New Republic or the retaking of Mandalore, here we zoom in to a small story that, despite it’s simplicity, fails to be intimate. However, there is one Grogu sequence that is the standout and felt like what the film needed to explore more...
Ultimately, THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is a film that plays it safe, but has a lot of heart and affection for the father-son-duo we’ve all grown to love. With entertaining action sequences and a thrilling score, it’s a film that wants us to love it as much as we love Grogu.

We were lucky to watch the first 8-episodes of MAUL – SHADOW LORD and we're happy to report that the show's story is as magnificent as it's stunning animation. A new-noir series mixed with lightsaber action makes this show a great addition to SW canon. Devon and Lawson are excellent co-leads 👹👹👹👹👹/5
THE AGE OF MAUL HAS BEGUN! After The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch, Lucasfilm Animation has developed a reputation for excellent stories and pushing the medium forward. With a character like Maul, who we’ve explored considerably in other media, the question remained if series centered around the villain could continue to deliver. It should be no surprise to anyone that with MAUL – SHADOW LORD, Lucasfilm Animation has done it again! And despite being set in a period we’ve explored, and executed with a familiar animation style, MAUL somehow pushes the bounds of narrative storytelling and artistry.
Much has been said about the more “painterly” style this series uses, and indeed, seeing it complemented with gorgeous oil matte paintings take the animation’s aesthetic into new heights. Praise also needs to be given to the LIGHTING in this show-- the dramatic use of light and shadow really help accentuate the artwork and help frame the darkness that this narrative strives for. Each episode will keep you saying, “this is beautiful!”.
A series focused around one main character can sometimes fall short, especially when that character is a villain who can be more impactful in controlled doses. While a character like Thrawn becomes less compelling as a main focus, MAUL – SHADOW LORD does an excellent job at balancing Maul’s story with the stories of Jedi Padawan Devon Izara and Captain Brander Lawson.
These three characters form a triad of perspectives each symbolizing their unique relationships to the Empire. Maul betrayed and discarded, Devon persecuted and hunted, and Lawson doubted and oppressed. Devon and Lawson’s intersecting journey’s help strengthen Maul’s journey and make him a riveting anti-hero. Making this story more of a neo-noir/gangster story also helps give this series a fresh tone.
While all Star Wars animated series have dealt with serious themes (the struggle against fascism notwithstanding), they have tonally veered in favor of a younger audience. MAUL – SHADOW LORD seems to be an exception. It feels like a show geared for a generation that grew up watching The Clone Wars and now meets them where they are. Perhaps it’s the influence of Andor, or maybe it’s the sign of the times, but this series deals with its dark subject matter with maturity and clarity. The arrival of the Empire on Janix can’t help but mirror the difficult times we live in and the comparisons to ICE can’t be ignored.
MAUL – SHADOW LORD is a triumph. It continues Maul’s story while also giving us many new captivating characters and an intriguing, sinister, and engaging plot. Can’t wait to continue this story through Season 2 (and beyond?).

REIGN OF THE EMPIRE IS BACK!!!
In this thrilling sequel to The Mask of Fear, set one year before season one of Andor, truth becomes a weapon of the Empire.
Over a decade into the Empire's reign, life under Imperial rule has become routine. The days of the Republic have long passed into memory-if they are remembered at all.
Within the Senate, Mon Mothma and Bail Organa face dwindling influence, for there is no difference between the will of the Emperor and the direction of his Empire. Bail increasingly shifts his focus to support clandestine resistance efforts, knowing a successful fight against the Empire will come from beyond the halls of power.
Across the galaxy, disparate rebel factions are rendered outcasts, branded criminals, and pitted against each other. On Ghorman, an idealistic student group seeks to make meaningful change, unaware of the ISB agent who seeks to sabotage them from the inside.
Leaders like Saw Gerrera and Anto Kreegyr squabble and bargain to survive one more day against the crush of Imperial might. Trust is rare and betrayal quick. A distracted, disorganized resistance is one that is easy to snuff out. There are few heroes...and no alliances.
When one of Gerrera's partisans is captured by the Empire, time is running out for senators, outcasts, spies, and all those that desire a better tomorrow. What the prisoner knows could help the Empire eradicate any whisper of resistance, end any rebellion before it can truly begin-and ensure that the Empire's truth is all the galaxy will ever know.

The JAR JAR one-shot comic book is a delight! Ahmed Best really did a phenomenal job bringing Jar Jar back and connecting his story to Kelleran Beq’s! Fractal Radios, the exploitation of labor by a populist leader, so many great things that make this a special read. Pick it up if you haven’t yet!
