An early start meant Tawny Owls for #FirstBirdOfMyDay… they were having quite the “Scrrrreeeech & Tooo-Whooo” off as the first fingers of dawn were creeping up from the East.

I’m on the “Naughty Step” Brigit - I confess I did not realise that the Mighty Wren was on the Amber list. Adore them. 💚 Perky tail feathers, the bobbing, rapid flapping of wings. Is there any bird with a higher ratio of Loudness of Song to Size of Bird?

Great Tits for #FirstBirdOfMyDay but a lot going on thanks to it being a still & calm morning which made it easy for the Merlin @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social to pick up quite a crowd. Pink-foot & Greylag Geese numbers rising quickly.

… #RedSquirrel sure do love Wellingtonia / Sequoia (I know not a native tree, but so much fun to watch them doing their helter-skelter).

And Jim @pickardje.bsky.social , let alone the stress & distress it causes, there is so much time, money and effort spent on #InheritanceTax Planning… … all of which could be put to far, far more constructive activities… …which would generate growth AND taxes!

“Show me the incentive and I will show you outcome” Munger. Absolutely right Jim. —- Get rid of Inheritance Tax. The uber-rich rarely get touched by it. It catches people who have an asset that has seen a price rise (though NB London Property prices have hit a proper “Air Pocket” so less tax £££s)

#Geese for #FirstBirdOfMyDay … numbers increasing daily as are the size of the skeins (this was the ~5th passing over). Hope you are feeling better.

Very #Autumn feel to the morning; #Dahlias still putting on a show, but the colours of the trees & foliage in the #garden after the lightest of frosts a few days ago are on the change.

Treecreepers for #FirstBirdOfMyDay but a fly-by from somebody I don’t see that often overhead, normally on the River, a Red-Throated Diver.

Notably smaller strike impact area of dispersion of feathers with a sparrowhawk as compared to when the #Peregrine hits a pigeon. Interesting how frenetic the feeding is; there are Ravens & Buzzards about and all those feathers will attract them. #BirdsOfPrey

Camouflage of #Butterflies & #Moths is brilliant. #PaintedLady in the Pear Tree… … and a #SilverY beside a young (I am guilty of leaving too much fruit on it this year) Apple Tree. #WalledGarden

I passed the awe-inspiring Savernake Big Belly Oak at the weekend (I was South from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿). As with every time I see it, I struggle to get my head around it having been around for a 1000 years. — Very noticeable change of colour to Autumn already there while we are clinging on to “Late Summer”.

Robins for #FirstBirdOfMyDay but Nuthatches belting out alarm calls again so there must be something in the edge of the Oaks Wood. I did see a glimpse of a large #BirdOfPrey yesterday evening; long tail feathers, almost white in the evening sun, much larger than the fleeing pigeons… #Goshawk ? 🤷‍♂️

#Beavers been properly busy in a wood that we had been planted a while ago along a wee burn that leads into the River Forth. As you can see they have been busy doing plenty of “thinning” work… …would like them to get stuck into more of the Rhododendrons. Balance? Field drains fall into this burn.🤷‍♂️

Great pic Nicola - I 👀 some fresh grass under the brown post the rain. Have not the Ospreys here for a week or so (i think that they follow the R Forth, in same way as we would drive down a road) - perhaps they headed South before the strong winds turned up here (must make it hard to hunt fish).
