There seems to be a wave of people who champion the Tomb Raider Reboots as some giant fucking disaster that bombed and everyone hated even though all the games sold decently and reviewed well. I cannot for the life of me comprehend where this sentiment came from.

This is some historically revisionist bullshit right here. All three games in that trilogy sold fine to really good. Square Enix literally got clowned because they called the first one a disappointment despite selling 3.4 Million in a month. The first one sold 15 Million units. Fuck off.
