I think part of the issue is that GOP voters aren’t “presented with the option” if they don’t go and vote , and ads where Angela Paxton doesn’t mention anyone else named Paxton don’t count . They have to affirmatively do it! Also while are on Texas the polls there were pretty good in 2018!

There definitely used to be down to the wire SCOTUS races too! I think that Dems have developed a Sec of Ed like advantage in those races, but I think it helps a lot to be able to tell people what the partisanship is leads to some truly wild differences that you can't get with actual party labels
