Where the hell is the giant now?
A quote from Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

Shades of Lloyd Bentsen.
An historic quote from Senator Lloyd Bentsen to then VP candidate Sen. Dan Quayle: “Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.”

Ditto. I mistrust all the hype around any candidate and look at their signature policies. At this point, I’m still undecided but leaning Steyer.

Nuclear *might* have been at least a bridge to get us to max renewable energy *if* we had invested in new nuclear power stations 20+ years ago. Now the time lag and cost/benefit simply don’t work. We should fully invest in renewables and remove carbon energy subsidies now.

Yes, they make women wear excessively restrictive costumes and severely limit their rights and freedoms.
A photo of a group of women lined up in a group, dressed in long red robes and white bonnets, from the TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

@glenrl.bsky.social Every word of this – the clock is ticking.
A post by Glen Lancaster, a Canadian, who is commenting on the current political situation in the United States. The post expresses frustration with what he perceives as American inaction in the face of growing authoritarianism, arguing that waiting for midterms is not a viable strategy.

* Authoritarian regimes do not pause for elections; they entrench themselves and rewrite rules.

* Americans should use their current legal, civic, economic, and institutional leverage immediately.

* Recommended actions include mass pressure, coordinated action, strikes, lawsuits, and relentless visibility.

Democracy should be defended in the present tense, not just during elections every four years.

Heather Cox Richardson remains the absolute queen of acerbic understatement: substack.com/@hrichardson
“House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) continues to try to pin the upcoming catastrophic lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) funding on the Democrats. But with the U.S. Department of Agriculture sitting on $6 billion in funds Congress appropriated for just such an event, the Treasury finding $20 billion to prop up Trump ally Javier Milei in Argentina, Johnson refusing to bring the House into regular session to negotiate an end to the government shutdown, and President Donald
J. Trump demanding $230 million in damages from the American taxpayer, bulldozing the East Wing of the White House to build a gold-plated ballroom that will dwarf the existing White House, and traveling to Asia, where South Korean leadership courted him by giving him a gold crown and serving him brownies topped with edible gold, blaming any funding shortfall on Democrats is a hard sell.”

It’s no coincidence that Denmark (and other Nordic countries) consistently appear near the top of the World Happiness Rankings.

This couldn’t have anything to do with it, could it ?

Simple, effective, practical. So of course we will probably never do it.
A screenshot of a Mastodon post saying “I've identified a way of scaling up human-level general intelligence for much less than the hundreds of billions of dollars OpenAI claim to need to spend.

It's called nursery education and free school meals. It takes about 18 years to take full effect, but if you start now it'll overtake LLMs in usefulness within 1 year.”

Top 10 countries for patent applications in 2023 (vs. 2022).
A table of international patent filings in 2023, showing that China filed well over 3 times the number of patents as either the U.S. or Japan, its closest competitors. China filed roughly as many patents as the next 9 countries combined, and is growing that number faster than any other country on the list (except Republic of Korea).
