I avoid post 2e DnD So my meta currency exposure is more modern stuff that does make bennies etc a bit more exciting to use.

This discussion explains why some folk don't like meta currency mechanics in games. I must admit, I would avoid being a douche GM. Players should accept the social contract though. Spend these things to be awesome, that is what they are for.

System wants you to spend them. If you decide not to system takes it away and allows the GM to mess with you..aka bennies are a complication generator. Avoid complications by being awesome as a hero (aka spend bennies to unlock heroic actions)

Maybe have an in system flag, once you have more than 2 the GM can start to pinch off you. So spend or risk theft. So you can hoard 2 but not 3+

My trinity of DnD, CofC and Traveller is a good shout. But maybe OSR (bfrpg or Dolmenwood) Cthulhu Dark (horror and minimal rules) or Dee Sanction Alien (yze and IP done right) or STA Of course I really wanted to say 3 of mine

Drop hints without laying it out e.g. He looks friendly but his eyes are shifty and his vibe is off. He fiddles with a dagger, it has some blood stains on it (evil npc will attack) She looks evil but she smiles warmly and her body language suggests she harbours no ill intent. (non combat npc)

Talking of religion in science fiction, I'm adding a slide or two on The Handmaid's Tale. Any others I should be mentioning?

Came here to add Foundation and 40k, also second Star Trek. Enemy Mine (film) sort of had some religious bits as I recall. Also don't forget Star Wars "hokey religion, Soths and Jedis" Much sci fi questions religious dogma, can be good but often is actually bad or exploited by baduns

I see you liked my post, this means you desire more facts! Like computers are made from silicon, or sand basically. This means corals are the first supercomputer units built by man in the early years of life. They made a breakthrough discovery known as "The 42 answer" by IT experts.

Isn't Dune a study in the dangers of prophecy, with blind faith and cult leaders? Aka Religion is bad Also see side eye re ecology and the lure of power making folks do bad things "for the greater good" The Orders are super specialized "human computers", less religious imo, maybe cult like though

I think you are lacking confidence in how knowledgeable AI is. I mean I know for a fact that eggs come from Dinosaurs, as such oil makes great omelettes as oil is basically Dinosaur juice with added plant extracts. Birds are basically Dinosaurs as well. Do you want to ask me more?

I subscribe to OSR being a retro clone. However, I can accept a game that channels the feel of the 70s and early 80s style of play if nudged. IMO, a game being old is not OSR, it is simply old. The fact that it is, in many ways, very modern in design proves that there is nothing new under the sun.

I support YGMV and rule 0 (aka rules are guidelines and you as the referee can hack to suit)

UKGamerspodcast @trebormills.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That is fine, if effort is not worth the reward then park game as "old/retro". Maybe a fan policy so others can publish support material as "unofficial and not recognised but compatible"

I 100% agree that stuff should be preserved as older editions show the development of the hobby and also often offer unique rules and experiences (even if sometimes that can be a real head scratching "of its time" moments)
030
UKGamerspodcast @trebormills.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I tend to gravitate to older editions these days as I find newer versions are often soulless updates 0e or B/X DnD 1e whfb/whfrp 1e VtM 1e Pendragon LBB Traveller CofC (pre 7e, maybe pre 5e) RQ2 0e Mothership (aka the original not the KS version)

UKGamerspodcast @trebormills.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Why unpublish? Continue to offer them as older and no longer supported games (consider options such as free, pwyw, low cost) Alternatively check them to see if a new edition is needed. Tidy up, clarify, streamline, better layout etc. What are the best sellers? Which still have interest to you?

Sadly I have a few ideas stuck on development limbo. But each gets some attention at some point. One adventure is into year 4 of "in progress" Then I have game ideas, I find dreaming up settings and mechanics far easier. But you need to test the system, via an adventure.

UKGamerspodcast @trebormills.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I struggle with adventure writing. You need a premise, write up some notes, then test it and also make it understandable/playable by others. Part 1 is often easiest. A deadline often helps focus the creativity. If I get stuck I sometimes switch to something else.

For me avoid weekends as that is family time, evening often best as working in the week (after 1900 and finish by 2300). However, one off sessions at weekends is viable. This makes campaign play a problem and also need to avoid too many back to back sessions as well

My Gripping Beast wolfskin beserkers are my Pig Wars unit. The most deadly figure on the table was normally the unarmoured washer women wielding a improvised weapon (typically a goose)

I shall be different and say no. A rules book is a rules book. The adventure is its own thing. However, I do suggest it is nice to have an adventure supplied as a standalone free PDF or bundled with the PDF version of the rules.

Pig Wars has a shield wall rule, which can be a challenge to break. Single figures are much easier to batter. Played mostly as a skirmish game,it is fun. However, also tried as a mass battle game which worked well (1 stand was used as 1 figure).

Work continues on my adventure ideas for my own games, Cthulhu Hack/Dark and even Traveller. Ancient/Fantasy Wargame idea is in beta testing. PBM Dagon Pass campaign is entering launch, may check third party terms to be able to release rules pack after a few months of play (likely free pdf)

Probably the answer is based on the group, the genre and the purpose of the rules. Are you free forming it? Is it a gritty simulation? Is it story or murder hobo? Is it faction play or intimate social play? Are you players munchkins? Are you as a GM an arse? Are you doing a campaign or 1 shot? Etc
