Doing a critical read of a quarter-wit‘s propaganda book is certainly a choice. Feels like you’re actually doing him a favor here by playing along with the fiction that his ideas merit good faith engagement. Even Rich Lowry doesn’t think Rich Lowry’s ideas merit good faith engagement.

Jeff Parker ETA I lVtet in Berkeley last night. Cannot recommend this band highly enough. Ethereal minimalist improvisation. Book ending this show with two Fred Frith projects last Thursday and this coming Tuesday. It’s a good week for free/avant jazz in Berkeley!
Jazz band on stage under a sign reading The Freight. Right to left is a seated tenor saxophone player, the upright bassist, drummer and a seated guitar player.

I saw them last Sunday in Napa and was hoping for that. Saw it at the Denver Fillmore one of the first times they played it, I believe. Napa was spectacular show nonetheless

Exceptional show from JRAD in Napa last night and also the worst concert sound I’ve heard in years. The house PA was a mess from beginning to end. Undersized, underpowered, shrill, speakers on the fritz, random loud popping throughout. Mix wasn’t great but that’s downstream from the trash system

Niche post but this is a perfect encapsulation of what I’ll call the Family Trap that ultimately killed Jerry Garcia and which Phish pivoted to avoid when they reunited in 2009. In this manner, Red Light Management is good, actually

Caught Mary Halvorson: Canis Major in Berkeley last night. Great to hear her playing her original compositions. A touch more melodic than the usual avant-garde stuff she plays with Zorn et al. They even played a ballad! Band is David AdewumI, Henry Fraser and Tomas Fujiwara
A stage bathed in blue light. A sign hangs behind the band reading “The Freight” From left to right we have Mary Halvorson, seated and playing guitar. Henry Fraser on acoustic upright bass. Tomas Fujiawara on drums, and David Adewumi on trumpet

Timeline cleanser and @erikloomis.bsky.social bait. I saw a fantastic show Wednesday. Billed as “Scott Amendola, Fred Frith, Thomas Dimuzio, Ben Goldberg, Larry Ochs aka Strolling Gnomes”. Two 40ish min sets of improvisational music. We have a nice little free/avant-jazz scene in the Bay Area.
Five person band on a small stage, bathed in red light. The musicians are Scott Amendola, Fred Frith, Thomas Dimuzio, Ben Goldberg, and Larry Ochs. The photo is from their performance on Wednesday January 28, 2026 in Albany, CA at the Ivy Room
