Yesterday, we recognized April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Travis County. I'm grateful for all of our partners from around the county working to end child abuse. We strive to ensure families have what they need to thrive — when families have what they need, kids are safer.

Measles cases are rising across Texas. Please check that your vaccines are up to date and effective, and vaccinate your children as recommended by their healthcare provider. This is important to keeping newborn children in our community safe.
A graphic with a navy background. A red cartoon tool box with gray and orange tools is in the middle with the commissioners court deal. The text reads in white letters, "Measles toolbox." There's a red arrow at the bottom. On a navy background, the title is in white letters reading "rates" with a maroon highlight. The text in white reads "The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported 505 cases since January. 57 of the patients have been hospitalized. There have been two fatalities in school-aged children who were not vaccinated and had no known underlying conditions. 495 of the cases are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status." A gray and orange screwdriver cartoon is in the corner. On a navy background, the title is in white letters reading "symptoms" with a maroon highlight. The text in white reads: " Fever
Dry cough
Runny nose
Sore throat
Inflamed eyes
Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background found inside the mouth
Skin rash of large, flat blotches" with a gray and orange hammer cartoon drawing. On a navy background, the title says "stages" in white with a maroon highlight. There are three maroon rounded squares with white text. the first one reads "Infection and Incubation. For the first 10-14 days after infection, measles spreads in the body. There are no signs." the second one reads "nonspecific signs. Measles begins with mild symptoms that could be confused with a cold for 2-3 days." the third reads "acute illness and rash. Small spots and bumps start appearing on the face and spread to arms & legs. The spots form larger rashes. The fever rises sharply, often as high as 105 degrees." there's white text below the blobs that reads "A person with measles can spread the virus for about eight days: starting four days before the rash appears and ending with the rash has been present for four days."

Since Travis County launched the pilot six months ago, our Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program has treated over 350 victims of violence, including 15% related to gun violence. HVIPs help stop the cycle by supporting victims and preventing retaliatory violence.
Photo of Judge Brown speaking at the press conference. Orange gradient on top of the photo with white text that reads "We designed the HVIP to help build a gun violence prevention ecosystem by not only providing world class medical care here in the hospital, but to take that care outside these four walls and connect survivors with community-based support services across Travis County.”
White text on an orange background that reads: "“Since its launch four months ago, the HVIP has treated 300+ victims of violence, with 15% of those cases being related to gun violence.
The goal is to give these individuals what they need to thrive once they leave the hospital, and to prevent retaliatory violence."
