LAST CALL!!! Momo 2027 Call for Abstracts EXTENDED till October 2, 2026 Momo is the forum where ideas, tools, and perspectives converge to address complex mobility challenges, and where transportation professionals from public agencies, private consulting firms, software developers, data providers, and academic and research institutions converge to shape the future of modeling mobility.  The theme for momo 2027 is Converge. For modelers, the endgame is always convergence. For all transportation professionals, momo takes up convergence in two more challenging ways: whether our data sources converge on the same story, and whether our work converges on better outcomes for the people we serve. We welcome abstracts on any topic in transportation modeling, data, and planning, particularly those related to the Converge theme. The best submissions will not just report results; they will reflect on what made the work credible, where the evidence converged, and what the profession can learn from the approach.  Topics of particular interest include: * Data, methods, and tools: data management; travel surveys, big data, and data fusion; data visualization and GIS; AI and machine learning * Modeling: model development in travel demand, freight, land use and socioeconomic, air quality; corridor, regional, statewide, and multi-resolution modeling; ITS and traffic microsimulation; calibration, validation, and application * Modes and emerging technologies: active transportation, transit, automated and connected vehicles, freight and new commercial modes, and electric vehicles * Planning and policy: equity and social justice, statewide and regional planning, sustainability and climate, performance-based planning, land use integration, travel behavior and trends, and public involvement  There are two types of submissions for momo 2027: * Individual abstract submissions. These are typical podium-style presentations that can be organized with similarly themed presentations to create a session. * Special session proposal for an entire block (90 minutes) that converges multiple viewpoints, data, applications, approaches and/or tools. Special Sessions are intended to create space for discussion, collaboration, and shared learning around topics that matter to the transportation modeling profession. Submissions consider theme, format, speakers and moderators, and audience takeaways. * Potential Session Types: * Panel * Workshop * Hackathon * User Group For more information on momo 2027, including volunteer opportunities, please visit modelingmobility.org/2027/

Proposed Changes to the Decennial Census
Hi TMIP community, Since many of us in the travel modeling community rely on Census data for our work, I thought this group might be interested in the proposed changes to the decennial census. Among other changes, the proposal would no longer include questions about race and ethnicity on the decennial census questionnaire and would prohibit questions about sexual orientation in the future. It would also change how usual residence is determined, including establishing a census enumeration period (rather than a single-day reference) and using tax and other administrative records to help determine usual residence. Uber & Lyft Stats across California
Dear TMIPers: A recent UT graduate, Dr. Priyanka Paithankar, pulled together an easy-to-use data dashboard for anyone to visualize the day-to-day (and hour-to-hour) variations in Lyft & Uber fares, trip distances, pooled rides, empty (deadhead) driving, and demand maps across California: http://caee.webhost.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/CaliforniaTNC2020DataDashboard.html. It reflects the 12-month population of 157M Uber and 61M Lyft trips (Sept 2019–Aug 2020) that the California PUC shared with SFCTA.  Back in 2020/2019, fares averaged about $2.21/shows how nearly 30% of every Uber mile in California is driven empty. Even though riders pay ~$2.21 per passenger-mile, the system collects only ~$1.56 per mile actually moved, a 30% revenue loss to empty miles that still congest roads. Uber also matches shared rides twice as often as Lyft (64% vs. 30%), and you can explore how fares vary by hour, day, and place, from ~$16 statewide to ~$43 at SFO. Hats off to the CPUC, Drew Cooper (SFCTA), and Joe Castiglione (Zephyr, formerly at SFCTA) for data provision! And big thanks to all who joined us at the BTR conference 2 weeks ago. (Classes have started here at UT Austin, & it’s a whirlwind of activity!) The new tolled Silvertown tunnel in E London will be assocaited with a tollon the neary, overloaded Blackwall tunnel, which was previously free.Hope this is of interest. Geoffrey Hyman Consultancy The new Silvertown Tunnel links Silvertown in east London to the Greenwich Peninsula. The new tunnel will help reduce congestion in and around the Blackwall Tunnel, help make peak time journeys faster and allow for better public transport links between both sides of the river. You need to pay a charge to drive through Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel unless your vehicle is exempt or has a 100% discount. This charge will help [...]

In the U.S. Puget Sound region (Seattle), Interstate highway 405 is being expanded to add a lane. After the expansion, the new lane and an existing HOV lane are both converted to express toll lanes (ETL). SOVs are allowed in these ETLs using dynamic tolls that change according to congestion levels. HOVs can use both ETLs for free (3+ during peak periods, 2+ midday). Everyone can use the lanes for free during nights and weekends. Some of the expansion has been completed, and some is under construction. [...]

Hi SangGu, It looks like you've accomplished your objective - the TMIP list isn't moderated but rather operates on professional courtesy and respect. TMIPers, DRCOG has an opening for a relatively mainstream travel demand model forecasting position. Duties include network coding, model testing and upgrades, documentation, responding to data requests, forecasting including a typically annual air quality conformity cycle (multi-horizon-year set of forecasts). The DRCOG Focus model is an activity-based model that traces its lineage to SacSIM. It's implemented in Caliper's TransCAD platform with custom C# code for the ABM components. It considers seven travel purposes and eight modes (three [...]

tmip.zephyrtransport.org
UC Berkeley Tech Transfer Class: Geospatial Data Science and Simulation for Transportation
https://registration.techtransfer.berkeley.edu/wconnect/CourseStatus.awp?&course=2610DS010803 Description The decisions transportation planners, analysts and managers make every day - where to invest infrastructure dollars, how to respond to incidents, how to plan for future growth - are only getting more complex. This three-and-a-half-day, hands-on course gives you practical tools to make those decisions with greater confidence and clarity. Using KNIME, a visual, low-code platform, you will learn about real analytics pipelines with actual regional datasets - no programming experience needed. You will leave with a working understanding of how geospatial data, AI, and simulation can strengthen the work you are already doing: designing EV charging networks, building resilient evacuation strategies, and understanding the environmental impacts of road decisions. Click here for a detailed outline. Topics Include * Data Science Pyramid: See how raw data flows through each stage to become meaningful insights that support real decisions. * Geospatial-Temporal Data Analytics: Work with mobile device data to understand how people and goods actually move through your region - and what that means for planning and operations. * Enterprise Ontologies: Build the data foundation your organization needs - a shared language for your business processes that makes data consistent, reusable, and actionable. * Synthetic Population Modeling: Understand how synthetic populations are growing into rich activity models used to model travel demand - bringing a new level of realism to transportation forecasting. * Infrastructure Design Use Cases: Apply data-driven methods to real-world challenges: siting EV charging infrastructure and designing evacuation routes that consider human behavior in an event. * Applied AI/ML: Explore how machine learning and generative AI are already being used in transportation - and where these tools are headed next for infrastructure design. What You Will Learn You will work hands-on with actual regional datasets to build complete analytics pipelines from start to finish. You will see how synthetic populations are generated and used to simulate activity at scale - including a full simulation of the Bay Area across 101 cities. You will gain practical experience with real-world mobile device data and learn how to interpret it alongside your models. Most importantly, you will learn how to translate technical findings into the kind of clear, compelling analysis that drives investment decisions and shapes policy. You will leave with a grasp of the challenges of using machine learning and GenAI in transportation - and how to position yourself and your organization for what is coming.  Who Should Attend This course is built for mid-career professionals in DOTs, cities, and consulting firms - Traffic Engineers, Urban Planners, GIS Analysts, Data Architects, and Smart City leads - who are ready to bring data-driven thinking into their day-to-day work. If you are managing transportation models, leading a digital transformation effort, or simply looking for better ways to support the decisions your organization needs to make, this course is for you. You don't need to be a data scientist. You just need to be curious about what's possible. Class Technical Information All attendees are required to bring their own laptop. You can install KNIME directly on your laptop before class or simply log in through a browser-based virtual desktop that has everything pre-configured. Either way, you will be ready to work from day one. Sessions are structured around small groups, so you can engage at whatever level feels comfortable - whether you want to dive in and build or focus on understanding the concepts and outcomes. All participants are encouraged to bring a small data problem you are interested in analyzing. Background Reading and Industry Standards * NCHRP 23-27 Data Ontologies for Data-Driven Decision-Making: Research Approach and Findings 2026, Research Report 1169. * KNIME Beginner's Luck. * www.smartcities.berkeley.edu.
