Personally I thought it would have been cool for ChatGPT to solve a single major open question in mathematics and then spend the next 20 years failing to solve a 2nd.

That so many people with backgrounds in philosophy are balking at the opportunity to write 1000 words explaining exactly why you're wrong, and instead are just asserting that you are, is a pretty strong signal you're asking good questions.

I also like this framework because it doesn't deny the existence of real potential problems. Some dudes, ya know, do kill people. Those dudes require planning and a response, but like, it's still the case that most dudes in society have no desire to kill people.

I mean that genuinely. You should only add complexity to your worldview when it's absolutely necessary for describing reality and making accurate predictions. "Claude is basically a dude who lives in a computer" has a pretty decent amount of explanatory power, despite its simplicity.

I genuinely don't understand the distinction you're pointing at. How is it possible to "predict text" without "using words"?
200
trashedcoast @trashedcoast.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
But they do learn language by using it? I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that during training LLMs are given text with a missing word, try to guess that missing word, then update their weights depending on how accurate they were. I don't see how that isn't considered "using language"?
100
trashedcoast @trashedcoast.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I mean, I think access to an immense corpus of usage examples is necessary for humans to learn a language too?

I've never met a Philosophy Guy who didn't have a poorly contained urge to talk about philosophy bubbling right below the surface. A normal guy asking them to explain philosophy should be their Christmas morning. And yet Will keeps getting "do your own research" responses 🤔

Frankly, given that the inspiration for neural nets was neurons, it'd be kind of weird if we stumbled onto a way of modeling language that worked completely differently than the brain.

trashedcoast @trashedcoast.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

That doesn't mean external constraints on scaling can't exist, but it shifts the burden of proof onto explicitly identifying what they are.

trashedcoast @trashedcoast.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
While it doesn't imply an acceleration as much of a continuation of current trends, the scaling laws we've observed for LLM performance can be derived directly from the statistics of natural language itself, and the scaling laws themselves are scale invariant. arxiv.org/abs/2602.07488

The whole thread fails the "the best way to understand an entity's motivations is to listen to what they say" rule. Viewing OAI/Anth's motivations as being driven by a claimed sex cult, instead of just what they say directly, is an ugly form of conspiratism that adds no explanatory power.

A significant number of people here who would claim "slut shaming is bad" as a core value don't hesitate to slut shame Aella because they disagree with her.
1121
trashedcoast @trashedcoast.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
My least bsky opinion is that Aella catches a huge amount of discriminatory shit from people who would loudly proclaim to be against it if it wasn't towards someone they disagreed with. The weird puritanical posture people have towards Aella is incompatible with bsky liberalism and its embarrassing.

It's not just the wage gap in isolation though. It's the lack of available opportunities to work on something that feels truly ambitious and risky. Again anecdotally, but that seems to be the source of the anxiety moreso than just wage differences.
