Planning is critical to a safe exit strategy. But there are ways to plan safely that mitigate the risk to you as well as to friends and comrades should the state weaponize it’s power against you.

Based on a variety of factors over the last weeks, not the least of which was the recent supreme court ruling and notable anti-migrant declarations, we not longer endorse the UK as a safer country. It still may be a good choice for those in extreme danger but proceed with caution.

Our work began with information gathering. The fruits of that labor is a list of 28 ”safer“ countries for trans people who are considering migration. We will roll out information about each of these over the next few months in this thread. We hope you find this information useful. 🧵

Colombia is definitely not one of the safest countries, but it ranks well ahead of the US and with a very low cost of living this could be a great option for remote workers. As always with any colonial country any migration should be mindful of the indigenous populations.

New Zealand has all the problems of any settler colonial state with tensions between indigenous populations & the settler class. We recommend seeking other options if you are not Maori. Politically they have taken a rightward turn in recent years and this may undo many recent liberalizing advances.

No where is safe. There is only relative safety. Creating migration contingency plans is a wise idea, but wherever you are, you ought to invest your energy in mutual aid networks for food, shelter, and healthcare - locally, regionally, and internationally. Australia could be a good option for Commonwealth citizens. Although, like any settler colonial state it has tensions between the settler class and the indigenous Aboriginal people. Trans rights are relatively secure and work is available.

Uruguay is a risky choice. Financially it is best suited to remote workers as job opportunities are few. While it has good legal protections on the books it also has a rather high homicide rater when it comes to trans people. Approach with caution.

While South Africa still experiences massive racial and economic inequality, the legal protections for trans people are quite good. This could be a good option for Black people who do not want to be in a white majority country. Social safety and acceptance breakdown largely along class lines.

By all reports, Austria has a thriving trans scene in the larger cities, is well connected to the rest of Europe by rail, and despite risks of right wing political movements, remains one of the better options in Europe.

This is why we are doing what we do. Our threat modeling gave 12-24 months before things got bad bad. It‘s now three months in and the shorter timeline is looking increasingly plausible. That‘s nine months babes. USians cannot claim asylum, but there are still a lot of options. 🏳️‍⚧️

Our core team is based in Berlin. There is a thriving trans scene for people of all walks of life and a deeply caring community. Köln is also reportedly positive and has many resources. Outside these two cities one can feel the rise of the extreme right wing very acutely.

While not the most expensive country in Europe, Luxembourg remains phenomenally pricey. Probably only an option with a well paying job offer. That said, the laws protecting trans people are quite good and the country itself can be quite lovely.

With rapidly rising costs of living, Ireland can be difficult for working class people. While it is politically liberalizing, the traditional catholic culture could swing in a more conservative direction like much of Europe. We are cautiously optimistic it will remain a good choice.

Iceland like many countries in Europe is quite expensive to move to. Long dark winters and a very homogenous white population makes this less than optimal for people of the global majority. It is probably only a realistic option for tech workers or those with close ancestral ties.

The Netherlands is quite expensive. It is a good option for skilled workers although there are working class job opportunities as well. Culturally, the cities are going to be quite different than small towns. While this true everywhere it is important to point out given Amsterdam’s reputation.

Chile ranks quite well in terms of legal protections and could be a good choice for Spanish speakers. Affordable cost of living and a Pacific coastal climate make for temperate living. Lots of job opportunities in engineering.

Spain has very good legal protections, and a society moving in a more liberalizing direction. Along with a relatively low cost of living, this makes Spain one of our overall favorite destinations. Temperate climate and a warm culture round out the benefits. Wonderful choice for Spanish speakers.

France is a diverse country and good option for those who speak French. Skilled labor is always easier, but there are many working class job opportunities, and a strong tradition of immigration especially from former colonies. As with Europe generally, politics have shifted right in recent years.

Switzerland is the most expensive country on this list by far. While it has amazing legal protections it is only really an option for the very wealthy or those with jobs in software or finance given offers to relocate. In all honesty if you can afford to move there you probably do not need help.

Croatia is a coastal Mediterranean country with a reasonably low cost of living. Research indicates need for a good mix of blue and white collar jobs. Language may be one of the biggest barriers for people who do not speak the regional languages.
