In the 1970s, the Soviet Union offered a diplomatic gift: a
new U.S. Embassy building in Moscow. Construction
began in 1979 and was carried out largely by Soviet
laborers using Soviet materials. This turned out to be a
major security blunder.
What Went Wrong:
By the mid-1980s, U.S. intelligence agencies discovered
that the building was riddled with sophisticated Soviet
eavesdropping devices-microphones, antennas, and
wiring embedded deep into the structure. These weren't
just bugged rooms; the entire building was effectively
one giant surveillance device. Some of the bugs were so
deeply embedded in concrete and structural elements
that they would have required near-total demolition to
remove.
