London is Europe’s busiest city for air travel. But after experiencing Europe’s worst summer on record and amid growing concern about climate change, more Brits are calling for increased rail connections abroad, not more flights. See the poll results ➡️ bit.ly/4yhnHrh

➡️ City action: reform parking charges and local taxes based on vehicle size and weight.

➡️ A bonnet height cap of 85cm, and a car width limit of 192cm, applied to new type approvals from 2033 and all new cars sold from 2036. ➡️ Tighter vehicle standards: Euro NCAP needs to urgently update its protocol to start testing for the visibility of young children from the driver’s seat;

🗒️ So what we can do: ➡️ Introduce a Large Vehicle Levy, a tax paid on purchase of a vehicle that is determined by its weight, ensuring that larger, oversized cars pay their fair share.

Carspreading is fast becoming a public health crisis. There’s no way city leaders can continue to turn a blind eye to this problem - whether traffic congestion, parking stress or road deaths - they must act now.”

Oliver Lord, Head of Clean Cities UK added: “How many more reports are needed, or kids killed until the car industry stops pedalling massive and unnecessary SUVs?

T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
This is a textbook market failure. Unless the UK urgently reviews how these vehicles are taxed and introduces a Large Vehicle Levy, cars will only get bigger with growing consequences for congestion, safety, and emissions."

If the Government is serious on delivering growth and jobs in the UK it needs to hold the line on the most important Industrial and energy security policy that the country has and which is delivering astounding progress.
120
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
derailing investment into the automotive jobs of the future, leaving consumers with no option but to continue to rely on cars running on expensive fossil fuels and continuing to leave the UK exposed to global energy crises.

At a critical moment for the UK’s clean transport transition, weakening the targets now would do real damage:
110
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Undermining it now is not a “smarter route” it is a step backwards and would jeopardize the entire UK automotive sector which employs almost a million people across the country.
110
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Carmakers that moved early, like Renault, are now gaining market share in the UK and globally thanks to great new EV models. Those that delayed are not victims of policy; they are betting on political backtracking.'' Tim Dexter, T&E UK Vehicles Policy Manager said.
121
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
“Let’s be clear: the SMMT has spent years overstating the challenges of the EV transition while downplaying industry inaction to justify weakening the ZEV mandate. The reality is much simpler.
130
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
The SMMT’s latest report - Same Destination, Smarter Route - exaggerates the barriers to the EV transition, leaning on selective evidence and shaky claims that do not reflect what is actually happening in the market.

£50 saving a month: EVs shield UK drivers from rising oil prices
Europe’s leading advocates for clean transport & energy

“Electric vehicles are not just cleaner, they are cheaper to run & far less vulnerable to global energy shocks. Accelerating the shift to electric is essential for strengthening the UK’s economic resilience and protecting households from future price spikes.” — Tim Dexter, T&E UK

T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
When petrol prices peaked earlier this year: ⛽ Petrol: £0.17 per mile | £109 to fill up 🔌 EV (home charging): £0.01 per mile | £59 to charge Diesel drivers face even higher exposure -paying up to 9x more per mile than EV drivers at peak, and around £71 more per month.
110
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
At a time when policy signals risk slowing progress -from extending the 5p fuel duty cut to calls to weaken the ZEV mandate - the evidence points firmly in one direction: ➡️ EVs are cheaper to run ➡️ EVs are more stable in volatile markets ➡️ EVs strengthen UK energy security

Now is not the time to reduce ambition on tackling aviation emissions
The UK Government is considering watering down its most important policy to reduce emissions from flying whilst untaxed aviation emissions hit record…
000
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
➡️ Keep the SAF Mandate focused on high-integrity fuels like e-fuels. ➡️ Extend the UK ETS scope to cover all departing flights ➡️ Unlock public revenue to accelerate aviation’s green transition It’s time to invest in the future of a sustainable aviation sector.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
➡️ Undermines UK industry - It is more likely to increase reliance on imports, especially from the US, than support domestic production. 👍 What should happen instead: If the UK is serious about energy security and tackling aviation emissions, it should:
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
➡️ Limited real-world potential - UK crop supply could meet only around 1% of jet fuel demand by 2030. There is no meaningful scale here. ➡️ Food vs fuel pressures - Diverting crops to aviation risks driving deforestation and increasing global emissions through indirect land-use change.
110
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
‼️ Why this matters: ➡️ Higher emissions risk - some crop-based fuels can be more carbon-intensive than fossil jet fuel once land-use change is included.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
❌ The problem Instead of closing that gap, the Government is considering weakening the UK’s main policy designed to cut aviation emissions -the SAF Mandate. And, following industry lobbying, a recent Call for Evidence has opened the door once again to crop-based biofuels.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
Despite this, aviation still doesn’t pay its fair share. The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) was designed to make polluters pay, but doesn’t cover long-haul flights outside the UK and Europe. That means around 83% of emissions from UK-departing flights fall outside the ETS.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
🗒️ The situation UK aviation emissions are skyrocketing. In 2025, seven of the top ten most polluting flight routes in Europe originated from London, with London to New York flights generating more carbon emissions than all car tailpipes in a city the size of Birmingham.

🤝 Our call to Government We are therefore urging the Government to keep crop-based fuels out of the SAF Mandate. We stand ready to work with Ministers and officials to make the mandate a success and to help build a resilient UK SAF industry.
110
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
📈 The mandate is already working Early evidence shows the SAF Mandate is already starting to boost the use of cleaner fuels for UK flights, even before the policy has fully bedded in. Like other successful transport policies, it should be given time to work as intended.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
✅ There is a better path A strong UK SAF industry based on advanced fuels could support tens of thousands of jobs and generate billions of pounds for the economy if the Government stays the course.
101
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
🌍 Why crop-based SAF is a problem Turning food and animal feed crops into jet fuel would increase pressure on farmland, wildlife and food prices, while delivering only limited climate benefits once wider land-use impacts are taken into account.
100
T&E UK @transenvuk.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
🔍 What’s at stake The SAF Mandate was created to support cleaner fuels that can cut aviation emissions over the long term, not to bring back crop-based biofuels that compete with food production and nature.
