I’m very familiar with Bender’s many splendored arguments against LLMs, but I can’t really say why she doesn’t think they’re an existential risk. Can you?

From what I can tell most AI researchers have a p doom well over 10 percent. Yann Lecun’s is deeply unimpressive, and also has that obvious monetary incentive. As for current approaches: they seem unlikely to stay current

You think? I have searched high and low for compelling debunkers. Most fall short. Best I’ve found is Robin Hanson

You often say doom scenarios are “science fiction.” Okay, so? Hinton, Gates, Yudkowsky etc spell out plausible scenarios. Yes they sound like science fiction, but so do all our chatbot conversations. I think the reporter wanted you to say concisely why you don’t see existential risk…he’s not alone

I have found LLMs to be extremely helpful with tech problems, which I consider a dispiriting waste of time. I am free to focus on content while it helps me zip through why this or that device won’t work or how to format in whatever annoying piece of software I’m using at the moment, etc

To play devils advocate: just because the Bush thing was in the news for a long time doesn’t necessarily mean very many people, proportionally speaking, actually cared about it

The second you get that bill from a tradesman, write the fucking check. Wise man once said ‘don’t let the sun set without paying the laborer’s wages,’ or he will never come back to your house

Your overarching point about corporate culpability is fair, but that too is ripped from the pages of many a sci-fi novel. Why do ai doubters seem to scorn sci-fi so much, and deride all x-risk worrying as nothing but sci-fi. Sci-fi is just folks imagining a plausible future, that often comes to pass

They don’t actually use body language and manipulate behavior and such. They mostly use props, like self-writing notepads and the like. The reason people call them frauds is they are constantly claiming the former, but it’s just not true.

Swalwell sounds bad in some ways. It’s also true that attractive young women have a good deal of power. They probably should not send nudes to married men.

Ok: LLMs make me go “holy shit” every day, and anyone who pretends otherwise *may* have an axe to grind. I don’t like them either, but I think reasonable minds have to start by acknowledging that their capabilities are astounding
000
transcrypt.bsky.social @transcrypt.bsky.social · 14/03/2026
It doesn’t discredit them, but it may explain the fervor and totality with which she loathes and minimizes LLMs. She’s obviously trenchant; I’ve been fascinated with her arguments. But I still can’t grasp how you can study language and not be increasingly impressed by these things.

You say “much of the tech landscape is trying to replace [your thing] with [their thing].” Might that bias you against their thing? Your criticisms of “AI” are so passionate and so multi-faceted that a quasi-professional resentment does seem like a plausible driver, at least partially
