Our penultimate topic for the #autism co-occurring conditions series: #aphantasia. As this isn't technically a disability or medical condition, but rather a characteristic of certain people's brain, let's keep this one a little more casual (though references still included below 😃) 1/8

A brief, not-to-be-considered-factual search on Google Ngram, shows the term seems to have emerged in literature in the 1970s. This emergence was followed in the early 2000s with a massive spike of mentions, so maybe we'll see an official diagnosis in the DSM-6! But, what is SPD actually? 2/9

I think after this series that I'm going to go into a shorter form series of diagnostic tools used in #ASD and other assessments, and then hopefully resume single-post content again mixed in with that. Maybe #WorkplaceAccommodations? I think so.
A series of diagnostic tools used in autism and other assessments, including:

- Patient Health Quesitonnaire-9 (PHQ-9)
- General Anxiety Disorder - 7 (GAD-7)
- Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale—IV
- California Verbal Learning Test—3
- Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2)
- Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q)
- Aspie Quiz
- Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) / Autism Spectrum Quotient - 10 (AQ-10)
- Ritvo Autism and Asperger Diagnostic Scale—Revised (RAADS-R)
- Weiss Symptom Record - 2
- Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire-3 (RBQ-3)
- Social Responsiveness Scale—2 (SRS-2)
- Autism Diagnostic Interview—Revised (ADI-R)
- Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System-3 (ABAS-3)

Well, I was going to make my next #autism co-occurring condition about #SchizoidPersonalityDisorder ( #Schizoid), but I started my initial review of it before jumping down the research rabbit hole and it turns out that the DSM-5-TR does not permit having both conditions 🙃
120
Tralin @tralin.ca · 24/09/2025
She definitely could! I'd recommend checking out the DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria for Specific Learning Disorder, specifically A5 and A6: www.psychdb.com/child/learni... The "With impairment in mathematics" section in the DSM-5-TR text may also be of interest. I've attached it here.
From the DSM-5-TR about dyscalculia and Specific Learning Disorder:

F81.2 With impairment in mathematics:
Number sense
Memorization of arithmetic facts
Accurate or fluent calculation
Accurate math reasoning
Note: Dyscalculia is an alternative term used to refer to a pattern of difficulties
characterized by problems processing numerical information, learning
arithmetic facts, and performing accurate or fluent calculations. If dyscalculia is
used to specify this particular pattern of mathematic difficulties, it is important
also to specify any additional difficulties that are present, such as difficulties
with math reasoning or word reasoning accuracy.
Specify current severity:
Mild: Some difficulties learning skills in one or two academic domains, but of
mild enough severity that the individual may be able to compensate or function
well when provided with appropriate accommodations or support services,
especially during the school years.
Moderate: Marked difficulties learning skills in one or more academic domains,
so that the individual is unlikely to become proficient without some intervals of
intensive and specialized teaching during the school years. Some
accommodations or supportive services at least part of the day at school, in the
workplace, or at home may be needed to complete activities accurately and
efficiently.
Severe: Severe difficulties learning skills, affecting several academic domains,
so that the individual is unlikely to learn those skills without ongoing intensive
individualized and specialized teaching for most of the school years. Even with
an array of appropriate accommodations or services at home, at school, or in the
workplace, the individual may not be able to complete all activities efficiently.

For post #️⃣1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣, I thought I'd give some insight into series and topics I have planned! Some of these are for here on Bluesky, and some I plan to do for YouTube content❣️ Thank you for following, everyone! It means so much to me that we can go through this learning experience together 💞
A bullet point list of educational autism topics for posting.

  Wrapping up co-occurring conditions series
  Short series on ableism
Series on boundaries, types of boundaries, and incoming vs outgoing boundaries
A series on the diagnostic tools of autism and other mental conditions
A series on autism resources (Especially YouTube/Bluesky creators, books, and websites)
A personal series on my journey of being autistic, from childhood until now
  Series about unmasking
  Mini-series on workplace accommodations
  Series on stimming
And so, SO many more one-off topics and small series’!!!

The crossover can be difficult to figure out where the line is. I think the "another mental disorder" clause covers it well, where something like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, or even stimming behaviours in autism could better explain those similar symptoms.

What a loaded question 😅 This is something I also wondered: I suspect there are several psychological components at play. The ability to hear would be based on "absolute threshold", or the minimum amount a person can hear (typically 0dB). But the "loudness" is the psychological component of it.

Needless #autistic explaining of the day: If something has a "steep learning curve", that means that it's easy to develop the skill (assuming you're not an odd duck who graphs time on the Y-axis). If the curve is steep, it means that over a short span of time the skill is quickly learned.
