“I’m so proud to represent New Jersey.” Jack Hughes gets a rousing reception and a ceremonial flag from Gov. Sherrill in first game back in Newark.

Whoa. A new approach by NJ’s convicted former senator, as the president makes a flurry of pardons. Menendez has about 2 weeks before he’s expected to start an 11-yr sentence, barring a stay from the 2nd Circuit.

NJ voters are largely unaware that there’s a primary for governor next month (June 10) according to a Rutgers survey. This - in spite of the 9 well-funded candidates, including many already spending heavily on TV, etc. 1/3

Video taken this morning in Newark, outside new migrant detention center that’s run by one of the country’s largest private prison companies. The site began housing detainees facing deportation on May 1, and has a 15-year contract with ICE.

Look what happens when NJ State Police troopers actually enforce traffic safety laws on the Turnpike and Parkway. Serious accidents plummeted by 18% in 1st quarter of this year, compared with 1st quarter of 2024, when troopers had essentially stopped writing tickets b/c they were mad at AG.

NJ withdraws its pending appeal over congestion pricing, but vows to “continue to vigorously defend its rights and take all measures necessary” to halt NY’s new tolling program.

From Oct. 2023 thru Nov. 2024, NJ has paid Randy Mastro and his NYC law firm $1.1 million to fight congestion pricing, according to data obtained through a record request. This likely does not include the 6-hour court hearing 2 weeks ago or the pending appeal. $250/hour is reduced rate, docs note.

NJ’s governor, Phil Murphy, has appointed a white-collar crime defense lawyer from a politically connected Jersey City firm to lead the SCI, which is supposed to be a watchdog agency.

Unscientific congestion pricing observation: I stepped on a bus in New Jersey at 9:09am. It was slightly more filled than usual but very manageable. We arrived at Port Authority in Midtown at 9:39am.

When Menendez was convicted of taking bribes and resigned from the US Senate and 2 other members of NJ's congressional delegation died, NJ lost seniority on many vital committees in Washington. Senator Kim was just named to these committees:

In a year that saw a drastic statewide slowdown in traffic enforcement by NJ State Police troopers, roadway fatalities soared. This screenshot was taken a few hours before New Year and the data may change slightly. During the slowdown, tickets for DWI, speeding and cellphone use plummeted. 1/6

Bob Menendez has asked that his Jan. 29 sentencing be postponed so that he can be there to support his wife, Nadine, during her trial (set to start a week beforehand) and so that media coverage of the sentencing doesn’t bias jurors who will weigh the evidence against Ms. Menendez.

The back of a holiday card from Curtis Bashaw is a good illustration of what it takes to run for statewide office in NJ. For example - $4,325.73 in EZPass tolls!
