Saw this on Ash yesterday at the Devil's Dyke, West Sussex. I think it is probably Parmotrema perlatum but the stalked soralia with soredia don't look quite right for P. perlatum; they are not at the margins of lobes but within the lobes. Haven't seen anything like this before. Any ideas? #lichenGBI

Fertile Physcia tenella. I have never seen it fertile before. Infertile P. it is very abundant on downland Hawthorn. Fertile, its rare. It has one round black "jam tart" apothecia containing fungal spores. In the secondary woodland south of Devil's Dyke by South Downs Way @southdownsnp.bsky.social

Watched an agglomeration of Ivy Bee Colletes hederae yesterday at the Devil's Dyke, on an steeply inclined unofficial path at the Devil's Dyke. Fascinating - got me thinking? #Hymenoptera #MiningBees #IvyBees @buglife.bsky.social #behaviour #ethology

Are some solitary, mining Ivy Bees, better at re-finding their nests than others? Observing a large agglomeration of Colletes hederae nests at the Devil’s Dyke. 12.09.26
Colletes hederae was recorded as new to Britain in 2001 when Ian Cross discovered specimens at Langton Matravers in Dorset. Since then, the bee has spread across much of southern England (as f…

Relict chalk pits on the South Down's are one of the best places to see chalk lichens. Bagliettoa calciseda. Monstrously difficult to see: immersed white-grey thallus - for goodness sake! Perithecia (fruiting bodies) immersed in pits & look like scraps of soil. Probably under-recorded #LichenGBI

Common Gromwell, Lithospermum officinale, in one of its preferred habitats - old quarries; here a relict chalk pit on Newtimber Hill, South Downs, in the scrubby part of the chalk pit floor. Not doing too well in Britain

Tiny, tiny Vervain, Verbena officinalis, on Newtimber Hill, West Sussex today. So small its easy to miss. V. officinalis "has been growing around human settlements since the Neolithic, and it was widely cultivated in medieval gardens". @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Devil's-bit Scabious, Succisa pratensis, is very abundant on short calcareous grassland of the South Down in September; here on Newtimber Hill. I did a plant survey today for my TQ2611 blog; but I also recorded what I saw using the Plant List Survey function on iRecord App. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Finally found some Juniper in this monad, on the Devil’s Dyke; been looking for it for ages. Decided to look it up on the BSBI DDb and found records from @graemelyons.bsky.social. Looked for Juniper Shield Bugs with the collecting tray and bash branch technique but only got a Hairy Shield Bug!

Sent my botanical assistant (Dewey Drone 1 from the Valley Forge) to find some plants on a pan-species walk at the bottom of the Devil’s Dyke. He found Centaurea calcitrapa & discovered why it’s called a thistle when it’s not. Ouch, he won’t sit on a flower head spine again. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

I saw Wood Club-rush, Scirpus sylvaticus, along the Poynings Stream in Poynings Shaw (ancient wet woodland) yesterday just before the spring from which the stream emerges. Haven't seen some for some time. A cracker! Been in steady continuing general decline since the 60s @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A walk today from Poynings village into Poynings Shaw (ancient woodland). Possibly Phaeographis dentritica on a group of ancient coppiced Field Maples, Acer campestre. The Graphidaceae family of lichens are very hard to identify to genus level let alone species level! West Sussex

In Poynings ancient wet woodland Shaw, around a chalk spring stream on the scarp slope of the downs, there are fab ancient beeches. On one of them was lots of Entergrapha crassa; small interlocking waxy brown thalli, spotted with small dot like apothecia, which often line up in dendritic patterns.

A walk today from Poynings village into Poynings Shaw (ancient woodland); on an old Ash I saw (left) Punctelia jeckeri and (right) Lecanora symmitca - I think! I forgot to bring my lichen kit! L. symmitca need chemical spot testing & UV testing to ID, to separate it from similar looking Lecanora spp

A walk today from Poynings village into Poynings Shaw (ancient woodland). Ramalina fraxinea ("belonging to the ash tree" Linnaeus, not always on Ash) on Fraxinus excelsior killed by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. BLS conservation status: notable & an International Responsibility species. Now rare in SE.

Catching-up on publishing backlog of old records has a good side: looking at beautiful things which you had forgotten you'd had seen! Plantago media Hoary Plantain. Typical of chalk grassland. See my blog at: tq2611-pan-species-recording.blogspot.com

This U. articulata leads to a bigger problem. I saw it three years ago and I have a four year backlog of hand written taxa notes and photos for this monad - would like to iRecord them all and enter them in this blog - going to follow @graemelyons.bsky.social’s advice on p. 264 Pan-Species Listing!!!

The rarest thing I have seen so far in this monad is Usnea articulata. Not unusual in its strongholds - seen tons of it at Wistman’s Wood, Dartmoor. VERY rare in Sussex. Only seen other than here at East Dean Park Wood (Ash, southern oceanic woodland) & Lullington Heath (Hawthorn, chalk heathland)

These are the habitat types that my monad contains: unimproved chalk downland, inc. chalk combe of the Devil's Dyke, ancient woodland surrounding a wet chalk stream valley from a spring, secondary woodland, part of an old chalk pit, & at the foot of the downs, low weald arable and pasture farmland.
