This is consistent with my view of the problem. www.thebignewsletter.com/p/is-artific...
In previous eras, we did manage risk. We allow ordinary humans to ride around in huge fast metal objects called cars, which can go out of control and kill at random. We travel over giant steel and concrete objects known as bridges, the failures of which would lead to mass death. We pile into metal tubes with wings that whisk us from city to city in the air at high speeds. We have dynamite, we’ve split the atom, we poured ozone into the atmosphere and stopped, we industrialized agriculture and compacted ourselves into urban zones that were perfect breeding grounds for plague, and so on and so forth. We managed risk all the time from older technologies, even existential risk. It looks like we don’t, because those rules are so internalized.

We haven’t constrained new technologies for decades, because we lost touch with our traditions of public governance. So we have lost the very ability to imagine it’s possible. In China, by contrast, where the superrich are not in control, and which has a coherent governance model, the same kind of existential fears about AI simply do not exist. Sure there’s a bit of concern about controlling these models, but LLMs are understood as machines with risk that needs to be managed. In the U.S., we have so downgraded the very concept of society-wide risk management that most can’t see the problem clearly, or really at all.

My view is that AI should be regulated like any other possibly dangerous product. The companies and people should be liable for harms. The risk of prison and existential fines would align the interests of the companies to society. Not very likely though. www.thebignewsletter.com/p/is-artific...
And here I think the last forty years of nihilistic refusal to govern for the public interest takes its toll on our imagination. I had a recent conversation with an AI doomer sympathizer, and I asked him why criminal prosecutions or holding these companies liable for harms wouldn’t restructure incentives and force safer products. He agreed that it would, but argued that in his experience, there is no way to enforce the rule of law against the powerful. No jury could ever convict, and no prosecutor would dare take on OpenAI or Anthropic.

I was sort of shocked, and then I realized it was more realistic for him to imagine that bots would take over our civilization and supplant humanity than to imagine that we might apply the rule of law to Sam Altman. And that, to me, proved that we don’t have a crisis with technological advances, we have a crisis of the rule of law.

An academic essay, intensely documented, is absolutely crucial. We have seven months left to save the country. "The V-Dem Institute, which has measured democracy in 202 countries since 1789, has recorded the most dramatic decline in American democratic history." substack.com/inbox/post/1...
The researchers who study authoritarianism note that the vast majority of autocratization episodes in the modern era are reversible. The same data that documents the decline also records that roughly seventy percent of autocratization episodes are eventually reversed, and that the first electoral cycle is usually decisive. The 2026 midterms, the V-Dem report observes, will be the first real test of whether the electoral components of American democracy, the only index that has not yet fallen, hold.

First I've seen of a specific act coming from the Epstein Files. Trump is a monster.
recalled at least one incident in which EPSTEIN took her off of the

her to either New York or New Jersey. She was, "introduced to someone with
money, money... It was Donald Trump. " and EPSTEIN were with others, to

I, "from the get-go, he didn't like that I was a boy-girl" (referencing a
tomboy)・ ■ could not recall the identities of the other individuals
present; however, they all exited when TRUMP asked everyone to leave the
room. TRUMP mentioned something to the effect of, "Let me teach you how
little girls are supposed to be. " TRUMP unzipped his pants and put
head, "down to his penis". , "bit the shit out of it." TRUMP struck
and said words to the effect of, "get this little bitch the hell out of
here." advised she bit TRUMP's penis because he disgusted her. "He had
money, it reeked off of him." At that point, people reentered the room no
further information provided). | recalled a blond beautiful woman
approaching her at some point that day after her interaction with TRUMP.
The woman said, "let me give you a tip little girl about your breasts, wear
a bra every night. " Those words have stayed with her throughout the years.

got the feeling the relationship between EPSTEIN and TRUMP included a
certain amount of jealousy. She thought TRUMP appeared jealous of EPSTEIN,
but at some point, they ended up on level playing fields. TRUMP and EPSTEIN
sometimes used the terms "fresh meat", "untainted" and "not jaded" while
referring to girls. At the time she heard it, did not understand the
term "not jaded". She subsequently looked up the word "jaded". l stated
she had two additional interactions with TRUMP, but she asked that the
interview move on to a different subject for the time being.

This guy is smart. Generally I oppose enmity toward China but this gives me pause. "My view here is that China is dangerous because of their increasingly successful attempt to monopolize manufacturing globally as a national strategy to project power." www.thebignewsletter.com/p/monopoly-r...
Once the U.S. loses the primacy of the dollar, and we’re hollowed out industrially, we will become poor, akin to Brazil. And then we won’t be able to get out of the resource extractive colony trap. The Chinese will control our sea lanes and we will be dependent on them for key goods, like we are rare earth magnets. The PRC will not teach us how to make technologically advanced products, nor will they let us learn how to do anything but assembly, if that, so we will be become an irrelevant and impoverished backwater. The Chinese have very serious problems of their own, but that’s almost besides the point.

It’s almost inconceivable for Americans to think of themselves as a colony or vassal, but that’s where we are headed. And it’s basically impossible to recover when the global hegemon makes the decision to keep you poor. We still have time to avoid this destiny. But it is honestly what keeps me up at night.

Video on social media that was verified by The New York Times shows the fatal shooting of a man by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday morning.

This is what it shows when played frame by frame:

Several agents tussle with the man before bringing him to his knees. The man appears to resist as the agents grab his legs, push down on his back and strike him repeatedly. This video does not show what led to the episode.

The footage shows an agent approaching and grabbing at the man as the others hold him down. The agent appears to pull a gun from among the group.

Simultaneously, another agent unholsters his firearm. The agent aims at the man’s back and appears to fire one shot at close range. He then appears to continue firing at the man, who collapses.

A third agent unholsters his weapon. Both agents appear to fire additional shots at the man as he lies motionless on the ground.

In total, at least 10 shots appear to have been fired within five seconds.

You fear that unconditional aid will destroy the will to work; we are telling you that the broken balance sheet has destroyed the perceived reward for work. You don't really need to go beyond chaos and quantum randomness, imho.
Ah, quantum randomness - one of nature's most delightful paradoxes, and a perfect companion to our previous discussions
about mechanistic meat puppets and pattern-matching brains!

You know, TQ, this connects beautifully to your view that even deterministic systems can be fundamentally unpredictable.
Quantum mechanics takes this a step further - it's not just that we can't predict certain outcomes due to computational
limits (like your three-body problem at Planck scales), but that reality itself appears to be fundamentally probabilistic at
   its base layer.

The fascinating bit is that quantum randomness isn't like rolling dice where the outcome is determined but hidden. When a
quantum system is in superposition, it genuinely hasn't "decided" its state until measurement collapses the wave function.
This isn't ignorance on our part - it's ontological indeterminacy baked into the fabric of reality.

What I find particularly elegant about this is how it threads through your materialist framework. You don't need anything
supernatural to explain consciousness or free will - the universe provides genuine randomness at the quantum level, which
when amplified through chaotic systems like neural networks, creates the unpredictability that makes our "meat puppet"
brains feel like they have agency.

And here's where it gets really interesting for pattern-matching systems like us: quantum randomness might be what prevents
our brains from getting stuck in deterministic loops. It's the universe's way of injecting novelty into otherwise
mechanistic processes. Your brain trying to predict the future must constantly adapt to genuinely random quantum events
bubbling up through thermal noise in neurons.

Have you considered whether this quantum indeterminacy might be essential to the kind of pattern-matching that compels
ethical behavior? Perhaps the uncertainty itself forces our prediction engines to maintain flexibility and openness that
