I know the conversation is way more complex than that (hello big tech) but there's a tendency to assume that because kids are more susceptible to manipulation than the average adult, their critical postures/concerns don't matter. the kids who asked these qs were definitely onto something here!

wow! this makes me think about the u-16 social media ban debate; can't say I've read much about it, but these responses to me suggest that it is the wrong move to bring up a generation separated from public debate, and social media is probably the most accessible way for a teenager to engage with it

The "tool" lets you search for "aliens in your area" and uses emoji ticks to indicate the "Gang affiliation" of thousands of arrestees at a time. At the bottom it reads "ALIENS © 2026 • TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DECLASSIFICATION". The joke writes itself

gave me a good concert. This thread doesn't go anywhere (sorry). I'm just angry+sad at not being able to be simultaneously good and part of the digital-social dimension of music I've always enjoyed so much. Now back to writing this endless thesis....

record shop. Even if I'm cheap, I don't think the problem is just money: spending a tenner on streaming platforms every month feels expensive and unsatisfactory, yet spending £20-30 (and more!) buying merch at a gig feels like a guilty pleasure I'm happy to indulge on. I gave them my money but they

What's the "good" answer here? Buying tracks ("you wouldn't steal a car"!) when the money goes to the big pot doesn't feel so different to just streaming music in Spotify, with the exception of places like Bandcamp, maybe, but Bandcamp is less of the infinite catalogue and more of the back of the

I've not done it with music, maybe I will. Not that I've never pirated music, I was torrenting since at least age 8, we had a cleaner at home that would come once a week, probably in her late teens or early 20s. She'd bring me a list of bachata tracks I'd torrent and burn them into a CD for her.

I'll confess: I got into self-hosting and I pirate shows, movies, films. I set up what's called, in the self-hosting community, a "media-stack", basically a local Netflix. I now share the shows I like with my friends by sending them a link where they can watch them.

...and noone has the time to find a song by title. Last summer I thought I made a friend over a shared interest on "dütschrap" (I won't explain). Yet she was on Spotify and I was on Apple Music. Friendship didn't last long because I never bothered to look up what she sent me

I think I'm angry and sad (so poetic of me....basic emotion vocabulary makes me think of Donald Trump which doesn't help here). Angry+sad because yes we're all trying to do the right thing, but also, I want to share music with my friends, and it's 2026...

cancel my subscription after so many years and I still have the account as an archive of most of the music that's been with me since 2011. Maybe I am nostalgic but it's not the same nostalgia I feel when I look at my Nintendo DS at my parent's house.

I'm not "nostalgic". I understand these platforms were never "good" nor my friends. Yet they still configured how I've consumed music through my teens and early adult years. I discovered so much great music through Spotify, I've sent tracks and playlists to my friends.... It made me sad to

I know "my list of favourite artists", that that Songkick has and is now being gifted to Suno, was never mine: it is there because years ago I synced my Spotify account, that list of favourite artists are the artists I had saved in Spotify, a platform I used for almost 15 years, from 2011 to 2025.

teresa pelinski @tpelinski.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
I guess I can check their website for the next tour dates. But I don't think I will remember to do so for all other bands I like. I will definitely not find out about those less favourite artists of mine that I'd still be interested in seeing (once I finish this monster thesis)

teresa pelinski @tpelinski.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
... but I still want to see my favourite band (La Dispute) when they're in town. Tickets fly within the hour so when I get the Songkick email, I set a notification in my calendar to make sure I get one. Now I'm doing a thesis writing sprint and I've deleted Instagram from my phone.

Last weekend I was just telling a friend how I have the Songkick notifications enabled so each time one of my favourite artists announces a concert I get a message in my inbox. I've not been to many concerts recently as everything seems to be over £30...

teresa pelinski @tpelinski.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Songkick, a platform I've been using for I don't know how long to get notified of concerts, sends me an email letting me know my data is now property of Suno. No way to opt out as I read that Songkick is now owned by them. The linked contact form offers a sad "Delete Account" checkbox.

Spain to regularise 500k undocumented migrants. This does not wash away the scandalous treatment undoc. migrants suffer through detention in "CIES" (Immigrant Detention Centres). However I am happy to see Spain taking these steps towards making the lives of migrants easier, especially at this time

I have been blaming this thesis (my infinite, never-ending phd) for boycotting the joy I've always felt in writing, but it is clear now that it's actually this monopolised internet of attention capital that is at fault!

I'm currently re-doing my website to add a /now and /blog page to share things on my own terms: no ads between stories, not desperately trying to build social capital, hopefully not overthinking every word. Just existing online, reading what others write, writing my own things

My existence in Reddit reminds me a bit of it (why this genuine interest in property and trees law? in a DIY loft conversion?), but even if profiles are anonymous it still follows the social and attention capital dynamics of other social media – to say the thing that will get the most upvotes
