Are You Haunted (part fifty-eight) “We’re stopping over on Sycamore, little street off Canal. The Keegans live just at the corner, practically neighbors of Mrs. Drybrook’s. I told Keegan I was curious to know why he happened to be around the place yesterday. We’re gonna swing by and pick him up.” Keegan waited at the curb with a wooden toolbox, and on their heads beside him, a steel mallet and sledgehammer.

The Totem-Maker (part one hundred forty-five)
The Totem-Maker Chapter Thirteen The Citadel (part one hundred forty-five) I cantered on, Cuerpha in the mood for this run, our way sloping downwards. My Totem had been seeking me, for the sensible thought came that I ought to seek it. And with these words, I addressed it: I know you won’t intervene. I ask only to be made conscious of my folly.

Are You Haunted (part fifty-seven) She wasn’t ready for Mr. Baker. “There you are. Good job you showed up.” “I’m not on. Someone’s waiting for me…” “Take coffee to Mr. Guy. You can do that.” She had followed Summers from the city jail, after their talk with Dennis. Followed on foot, stopping at the hotel, where she and her husband had not intended paying for their stay.

For sport For sport, for fun, for foraging under Nouns, you might, after stacking them, like discarded packaging... Under and among, beside, to and from... Pick descriptors out, as mots justes, pumped with the most juice To rile or please you We’ve lived so long, to learn we’ve lived, on a raft, on an acid lake, where corroding spume begins to eat up, through a fabric thinner…

Sequence of Events Chapter Two Mud in Your Eye “Another pearly gater, per the Herald.” She was not a secretary, because Harvey worked only three months of the year. He called Luberta his factotum, and would now and then lower her status to dogsbody. The terms were meant to disdain the notion of an automaton, or a creature, not to make her feel like one.

The Totem-Maker (part one hundred forty-three)
The Totem-Maker Chapter Thirteen The Citadel (part one hundred forty-three) Morning arrived, and Castor with the ponies, parting a heavy mist that veiled Torin’s lane. From discontented sleep I had risen before the household…and gained none of the hour of peace and privacy I’d congratulated myself on. I gave my usual greeting: “What news?” As usual, his answer took me astray.

The Totem-Maker (part one hundred forty-three)
The Totem-Maker Chapter Thirteen The Citadel (part one hundred forty-two) My purpose in these accounts is to teach of my journey to a modest wisdom—which I allow to be revered (for the poor of the land have only the wise to spare them tyranny). Also, to recall for the generations, what peoples once lived in those nations that the gods with sulphur and fire have laid low; for the city of Lom was not the only to be sunk in ash, whose traces at times emerge, but whose inhabitants are scattered, whose learning cannot be taught, for it is forgotten…

Sequence of Events (part eight)
Sequence of Events Chapter Two Mud in Your Eye i. Luberta Bragg was going out as a woman. The netted chignon was affixed to the headpiece; the headpiece was an evening cap like a wedge of orange…or lemon, she ought to say. Her theme this night was yellow. Desanges had wanted her in a pale, glowing fabric. More to the point, he had wanted money spent, one hundred dollars of it, and had written her the check.

Sequence of Events Chapter One A Personal Choice Stanley left his bed, found the glass of the window dewed over, a loneliness about the bungalow’s situation, with no outdoor view and surprisingly few noises…a bark, a motor, a footfall… He felt shipwrecked here in his niece’s house. He made himself lie down and doze. And thought, instead, of error. He did not angle, cared nothing for the fine points of doing so in a cold season…

Freda ignored this implication. “You had better not make Stanley nervous with all your prodding.

Sequence of Events Chapter One A Personal Choice iv. “I’d thought…or, I’d worried…” Stanley bent with his teacup and saucer over the table, pausing here, and gliding The Mason Bees nearer Freda’s. Freda had leafed The Mason Bees. She had then laid it on the day’s post. But this uncle, like her stepmother, was a Carpenter; and Dolores, if feeling a gift underappreciated, would draw attention to it in exactly that way.

She had no idea what Phillip’s telegram had meant.

Sequence of Events Chapter One A Personal Choice Late Winter, 1928 He had taken everything. He had taken other people’s stories, grown ruthless to it; stories confided in what amounted to a covenant, between a child of his parish, himself, and the ever-present Auditor. The ease of his surrender to this expedient, when telling lies had become necessary, proved to Stanley the depths of his degradation.

The Totem-Maker (part one hundred forty-one)
The Totem-Maker Chapter Thirteen The Citadel (part one hundred forty-one) A person in livery came walking, two child servants beating his path with fans of woven feathers, and blowing warnings through reed whistles. Their labor fluttered hems and head-coverings; they struck gently and blew piercing notes at those slow to stir from preoccupation. When to the crowd it dawned that this green-clad retainer sought the Totem-Maker, their movements gained the shape of an audience, clearing the street with good vantage in mind.

Are You Haunted (part fifty-five) When April arrived, she would stop in town, have tea with Mrs. Wolter and John, bring her basket with the knitted cap and scarf and bed-shawl, her winter gifts for them. The Totem-Maker Chapter Thirteen The Citadel (part one hundred thirty-seven) Our road began to descend. Trees clung less precariously to banks that did not vault, but sloped. Soon the trees’ variety had much increased, and the loneliness of the mountain crags gave way to vivid life, to darting small game, birds that flitted alongside us, dropping to probe manure pats; or, when we camped, to steal a bite of meat from the spit.

Are You Haunted (part fifty) As with any event sudden and surprising, the first explosion occurred in the midst of ordinary preoccupations. A deep rumble shook the ground. A row of windows on the mill floor exposed a flash of light, and when flames shot through a second after, Rohdl winced and cowered under a peppering of splintered glass. Those in the parking area clustered out of their workplace divisions, keeping their backs turned, as a voice warned...moving themselves down the fence.
