I think my issue is that this kind of ability (stand there menacingly while a big construct protects/attacks for you) suits gaara's character more than Sasuke, and once it appears for Sasuke it kind of makes every fight feel similar.

i can't really explain it other than the vibe is different! again, i think susano'o is incredibly cool, i just think the fact that it's kind of a catch-all defense/offense for sasuke ends up making it a bit boring as a manifestation of his eye powers.

yeah, as cool as susano'o is i think once he starts chucking that around as an ability that sasuke regularly can use it kind of breaks the power scaling irrepairably. at some point around then the story becomes more of a weird sci-fi/fantasy setting, nothing to do with ninjas anymore

yeah i feel like im mega biased in turn because i did just read hxh and a switch flipped in my head and decided that it's just the best manga ever maybe... i feel like i maybe don't see as many of naruto's successes because i'm SO familiar with them that they're just ingrained in my grey matter now

it's crazy though, how much it changes from early on. early naruto is incredibly charming to look at, really chunky and scrappy, it almost makes me think of people like jhonen vasquez. as it goes on it gets cleaner and more competent but loses a lot of its pizazz (imo!)

also the characters that show up in later naruto are just... less fun. the other konoha kids plus the sand ninja are maybe one of the best lineups of characters in 2000s battle manga. i struggle to remember the names of powers of any of the cloud/stone village ninjas that show up in late shippuden

but i feel like there's a slightly unhinged element to togashi's rendering that makes this way more successful in practice. togashi's art and writing is just altogether weirder in a way that i think compels me a lot more. kishimoto's a FANTASTIC draughtsman don't get me wrong!!!

one thought i had: early on kishimoto does this crazy detailed beautiful crosshatched panel of itachi looking back at sasuke... i think he's kind of going for that togashi trick of a "jumpscare panel" where a character's suddenly rendered in an utterly different way to convey a sense of threat

I do feel bad because it was very formative to me but every time I reread Naruto I like it less past maybe the first few arcs. maybe because I'm more familiar with a lot of the stuff it (unsuccessfully, imo) is trying to ape... particularly HunterXHunter
