Robert Redford died this week. He marked my youth! All the tributes are so well deserved. But why do so many of them fail to mention his great political movie, The Candidate (1972), where he plays an idealist running for Senate, who almost unwittingly ends up selling out.

I am glad to see this quote from Hannah Arendt in many places these days. Worth thinking about!

We're launching På jakt etter Norge [Searching for Norway], my book on the Norwegian 1950s in Oslo, at Gyldendal, on June 10, at 6 p.m. Alongside Ane Farsethås' book about me. Here's the gorgeous cover of my book, based on Nikolai Astrup's paintings.

Wittgenstein’s birthday yesterday. The one philosopher I wish everyone in the humanities would try to understand. Philosophical Investigations changed my intellectual world.

Is "theoreticism" -- the belief that the right theory (the right concepts), guarantees the right politics -- still as widespread as it was? Example: if we disagree on what a woman is (essence, discourse, performativity, etc), it follows thatwe will necessarily also disagree on politics?
