We have a fun new paper to appear at SIGGRAPH 2026, led by Columbia PhD student Xiana Carrera, that extends dual contouring to work nicely with [pure] signed distance samples. It avoids classic DC's additional requirement of providing accurate Hermite / […] [Original post on mastodon.acm.org]
A 3D model of a fan disk, reconstructed from signed distance data using (left) classic dual contouring with finite difference estimates of surface normals/gradients, which shows bumps and unevenness near expected sharp curved features, and (right) our improved method, which produces much cleaner and sharper reconstruction of features.

My two and a half month sabbatical stay in Wellington in beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand is winding down. It's been lovely! Got some good research and writing done, and developed a new appreciation for trail running.

When your paper achieves a bit of cross-disciplinary impact, but somebody else gets the credit...
A citation list from a biology paper, in which one citation erroneously lists C. Barry as a co-author (it should have been C. Batty, i.e., yours truly).

There's a new and very neat-looking SIGGRAPH Asia paper on constructing the swept volume based on the path of a moving (possibly deforming) object. Check it out! jurwen.github.io/Swept-Volume-Page
A rather strange twisted-looking smooth shape generated as the volume of space swept out by a rotating and translating sculpture. The left shows an opaque rendering, the middle shows the same shape with surface points colored to indicate the time, and the right shows a semi-transparent view.
