David Bowie | Sense Of Doubt Eno's famed oblique strategies worked a treat here. 'Emphasize differences' was Bowie's instruction. Eno got 'make everything the same as possible'. The palpable tension across the track is glorious, moments of optimism crushed by DUN DUN DUN DUNs.

It's the 1st of October, so it's time for The First Time Ever I Heard...David Bowie. It could have been any one of his mega hits. But for me, a childhood favourite film gave me my first taste of Bowie 🧑‍🎤

The First Time Ever I Heard David Bowie

Thanks to Queen Bitch being used at the end of a childhood favourite, I was loving Bowie for years whilst completely unaware.

First new David Sylvian proper album since 2009 is a 46-minute long instrumental born from improvisational sessions. Count me bloody well in! The Distance Between The Killer and the Killing out February 27th 2027 ❤️🎶

His first proper new LP since 2009 compiles improvisational sessions recorded between 2012 and 2025 into one 46-minute instrumental

David Bowie | Win Bowie's self-professed plastic soul record evokes some real feelings deep within me. David Sanborn's fluttering sax line is amongst my favourites, with such a dreamlike quality atopped by Bowie's take on the difference between winning and not losing.

#AllThatJazz Antonio Carlos Jobim | Wave I've been eyeing this one up for so long that the summer its look and sound pairs so well with has passed. The brooding nature of these fresh, short soundscapes is as comforting as any blanket to escape the harsh chills descending.

Listened to Cluster & Eno for the first time this morning. Then the second. And then the third... Between their avant-garde textures and his ambient sensibilities, this just hits all the right places, especially warming company for a chilly Monday morning.

David Bowie | Always Crashing In The Same Car Performed with the same non-lucid atmosphere as that which surrounded the real-life occurrence behind this song, Low's fifth track catches Bowie trying to break his cycle of suffering.

Last 7 days of music + big ass spiderweb. Cocteaus and Coltrane dominated, but so much good stuff this week!

#AllThatJazz This week marks 100 years since John Coltrane was born. To celebrate, I'm listening to one of his great records every night this week. Tonight, Ascension. Defies description, and definitely one I need to put headphones on for in polite company.

Mogwai | Mogwai Fear Satan The dictionary definition of epic, a 16 minute set that sums up all that post-rock could be. One of the finest debut album closers of the 90s, it's a track that demands open mouths and grateful ears when, eventually, it all comes crashing down.

Pixies | Hey Such is the flow of Doolittle, it absolutely needs to be heard front to back to get the power. But if one song stands out on a playlist, it's Hey. Recorded entirely live, once it kicks in, the groove, the rawness, and the sheer quality just never let up.

Horrible to hear Michael Kiwanuka has suffered a stroke. He faces a long battle ahead, but also announced his fifth album, Fudge, with more details coming soon. Wishing him all the best with his recovery, a talented man with the world at his feet.

Michael Kiwanuka says he faces ‘long, tough journey’ to recovery from stroke

The Mercury prize-winner said ‘quite severe’ bleed was why he’d missed support slots with Mumford & Sons this year

John Martyn | Don't Want To Know Either suitably ironic or entirely apt depending on how much Martyn recognised his own shortcomings, but this Solid Air track repeats the titular refrain with greater intensity and passion on every passing occurrence.

#AllThatJazz Today marks 100 years since John Coltrane was born. To celebrate, I'm listening to one of his great records every night this week. Tonight, it can't be anything other than the masterpiece that is A Love Supreme. What a joy and privilege it's been to see Coltrane all over the timeline.

King Creosote, Jon Hopkins | Bats In The Attic A dour nostalgia trip about life, family, and questioning legacy. The idyllic instrumentation fits with the rest of this special album beautifully, with KC's guitar played through a mobile phone speaker adding to lo-fi sonic gorgeousness. #MusicSky

Four-Calendar Café is often derided for its differences to what came before. But considering everything Cocteau Twins had been through, it should be celebrated for the magic it captures 👇 #MusicSky

Post Imperial Impressions: Four-Calendar Café

Cocteau Twins’ seventh album is often derided against what came before. After everything the band went through, its magic cannot be overstated.

Depeche Mode | Stripped A desire to go back to basics, Mode were ahead of their time in 1988 shunning technology in favour of love, or more likely, lust. Making great use of custom-made samples to eschew the bleakness of Black Celebration, this lead single took the band to yet another level.

#NowPlaying Cocteau Twins | Garlands Simon Raymonde was wedded to the idea that Cocteau music was made for September. I'm kicking off this week with Garlands which sounds made of and for the depths of winter. Decisively post-punk, before Raymonde joined, a singular piece of work in their canon.

Thought Gang | A Real Indication Angelo Badalamenti channels his inner Tom Waits on one of two self-sung tracks from Fire Walk With Me. Frightening, bewildering, and for Mr. Lynch, so hilarious it gave him a hernia. A fantastic accompaniement to the stark and gritty Twin Peaks film. #MusicSky

Talk Talk | Eden While true that Talk Talk's two masterpieces should always be listened to as a whole, Spirit Of Eden is loaded with hummable melodies, songs to sing along with in the shower. Eden is worlds away from pop, but you can tap your toe and have a spiritual awakening at the same time.

Paul Buchanan | Mid Air Kicking off Saturday morning with Buchanan's dulcet tones, sparse piano, and little else. Fourteen introspective songs from The Blue Nile frontman, only the closer coming in above three minutes, and a definite period of silence between them all. Pristine perfection.

Beth Orton | Comfort Of Strangers It's an apt title because it's taken a fair few listens for it to sink in that this is Beth Orton. Her first three* albums feel part of such a distinct triptych that a change was, while far from needed, certainly something to be applauded. #MusicSky
