Last week's snow. It melted. Then more fell and melted. And so forth and so on in autumn's familiar dance.

Wonder what last year's temperatures were like in comparison to the prior 35 years? Check out this graph from our Environmental Data Center manager @ubetula.bsky.social . Midsummer was hot, hot, hot! But it still snowed every month of the year.
Line graph of daily temperature averages (1990-2020) vs. 2025. Y-axis displays temperature in celsius; x- axis the Julian day of the year. Temperatures in July rose above 25C. Lowest temperature was in late December of around 40C.

Great day @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social. Not only is the lake officially ice free but I got to get out via helicopter to a thermokarst lake to the south of Toolik to work on an eddy covariance tower. Pretty good day all in all. @woodwellclimate.bsky.social

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about big animals—🐋🐋🐋—but over the last year, I’ve had a chance to learn more about the big role of small critters. Like voles in the tundra carbon cycle 🐭(also my first attempt to write about biogeochemistry, gah). www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Well we are not quite as chilly as Fairbanks or Cold foot here at @toolikfieldstation.bsky.social but it is still -40 out so it is pretty darn cold. Today I spotted a small flock of ptarmigan browsing in the willows around the station and basking in the sunlight.
