i want this future, but we need a ton more extensible software architecture, end-user programming UIs, semi-formal specification languages, ...

absolutely no way, right? the median computer user does not want to be a software engineer of all their software, and "throw claude code at a spotify clone" will absolutely not work for most people in 2026

hard pressed to think of a company with a more insufferable and infantilizing design practice than google. i try to use an image for a slide, it's composed of fragments to make it uncopyable, i zoom in to take a screenshot, i get a nice Fuck You Badge

otoh i think it's because (a) the auteur coders were already reasonably productive, and LLMs don't solve their specific problems + (b) to produce truly novel software you still need expertise to be creative. like Obra Dinn requires Lucas Pope to be a graphics nerd dukope.com/devlogs/obra...

Super excited to share "A Design Space Exploration of Async/Await". How differently does async/await behave across today's languages? (More than you might expect!) And what *is* "structured concurrency"? Check out our ~interactive~ blog post introducing the paper: cel.cs.brown.edu/blog/design-...

A Design Space Exploration of Async/Await
Every language pitches async/await as synchronous-looking code, and the same two keywords appear everywhere. But behind the shared syntax hide nine independent design decisions, and no two of seven mo...

i am confounded by the degree of VC investment in lean-for-program-verification given that basically every notable accomplishment so far is lean-for-mathematics and at its most applicable lean-for-PL-metatheory

By bringing the power of type systems to systems programming, we hope to open up the "Strait of Hormuz" that currently exists between PL researchers and systems hackers.

What’s funny and unique about Anthropic, I think, is they really think Claude is real and are simply letting him decide what he does and doesn’t want to do.

I think most software providers would like to say, we’re just making the tool, what you do with it is your business. Partly purely ideological tech libertarianism but part is a self-interested question of liability, I think. Once you admit you can do that, you immediately must wonder if you should.

One thing I find interesting about Anthropic’s apparent willingness to have Claude make these kinds of refusals is once you open the door to the possibility of software that refuses certain tasks on moral grounds it raises the question of what tasks you’re obligated to make it refuse
