I joined leaders, advocates and artists for Visions of Justice, using art to reflect on a decade of justice reform in Cook County and elevate voices of those impacted by our criminal legal system. Their stories show how far we’ve come and why we must keep pushing for change.

I’m proud to welcome NICJR’s Youth Justice Community of Practice to Cook County. For more than a decade, we’ve worked to reduce youth incarceration and expand alternatives to detention. I believe our work must also help prevent young people from entering the system.

As a former teacher, I know the power of education to shape a young person’s future. I was proud to support the 43rd Annual UNCF Walk for Education and its mission to expand opportunities for students. Investing in our young people means investing in Cook County’s future.

Peace begins with the belief that each of us can make a difference. At the 48th Peace Day Chicago, I was inspired by so many young people who are not only leaders of tomorrow, but architects of peace with the power to make a difference in their communities right now. 🕊️

As a former teacher & lifelong reader, I know the power a single book can have. At a time when access to books is being challenged, Printers Row Lit Fest celebrates literacy & the freedom to read. Sharing “Horton Hatches the Egg” with young readers reminded me of the joy a story can spark.

Twenty-five years have passed, but the loss of September 11, 2001, is still felt by families and communities across our country. We remember those who never came home, the loved ones who carry their memory and the first responders who ran toward danger to help others. We will never forget.
