25 years ago today I was living in Manhattan and working there as an emergency physician. The department where I worked, Beth Israel Medical Center, was the third closest to the WTC. After a brief flurry of activity we stood well manned and waiting as the arrival of survivors never occurred.

Mirador Las Torres, Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile On the walk up from Refugio El Chileno, the sky was richly overcast. As the sky began clearing, I spotted a few condors. The lifting of clouds came quickly as we crested, with views of the towers gradually emerging.

The Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The oracle was an adolescent girl from the community. It’s thought she sat over a vent that emitted toxic fumes. Her resulting delirious mutterings were then interrupted by the priests as prophecy.
