Taylor’s paradox: as the number of people citing Jevon’s paradox increases, the number of people correctly citing Jevon’s paradox decreases

That would be easy. Unfortunately we have a significant shadow IT problem in this household, eg somehow we gained three sets of fire hazard usb-a battery hand warmers at Christmas??

I’m pleased to announce that after complex negotiations my family has agreed a phased reduction in our USB-A devices and with the ambition of being entirely USB-C household by 2035. While it is unfortunate that we have missed our 2026 target we remain committed to the USB-C spec going forward etc.

Only Watercolour I’m afraid - Stamen shut down and Stadia now run the tiles, but it needs an account for hosting and I can’t support open ended usage. You can add them as a custom style using your own API key if you like. The Cooper-Hewitt still run a Watercolour server without a key.

The first version was released 14 years ago. It's been languishing as legacy Obj-C in my GitHub, until I got Claude Code to rewrite the entire project as modern Swift while I made dinner on Saturday night. I'm really pleased how the shuffle feature turned out - I've wanted it for ages!

Satellite Eyes is a free, open source MacOS app that sets your desktop wallpaper to the satellite view of your current location. I've just released 2.0, which adds an option to shuffle through a selection of interesting-to-look-at places from around the world. satelliteeyes.tomtaylor.co.uk

I snap out of it. I’m not walking out of here with a cup of baked beans. I’m afraid there’s been a mixup. We have a good old laugh about it, but I can see this will haunt her. I still think about it roughly once a week. Absolute highlight of the year.

A few minutes pass. She returns and hands me a warm polystyrene cup. Oh no, I think, as I crack open the lid. Baked beans. For a brief moment I consider just taking the baked beans. Maybe I can just eat them. Maybe one of my kids will eat them. (This is what it’s like to be British.)

Earlier this year, I walked into a cafe in a small coastal Scottish town. It had a kind of ‘only flat white in town’ vibe. Avocado menu, etc. While in the queue for coffee I asked if they had any beans. She asked if I wanted them to takeaway. Odd, I thought, but yes. She went to check in the back.

Since H5N1 flu is finally getting news coverage, here’s a looong 🧵 on what I learned while working on it for a few months at Ginkgo Biosecurity (I don’t work there anymore and this thread is on no one’s behalf) Everything here is info you can get elsewhere but just to lay it all out insomnia style

I've been trying to implement OAuth for Bluesky, so I can wire it up to favejet.com, and it's been hard work. The docs are complex and the reference libs are written in Typescript (lots of indirection). The best thing I've found is this Python implementation from scratch: github.com/bluesky-soci...
