tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 02/10/2026BOTD, Graham Greene. An all-time favorite author of the inner lives of humans under pressure. Some were spies, some were teenage gangsters, some were lovers, one was a priest but no saint. 130
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 30/09/2026What hits the spot better after a late evening Zoom meeting than a charcuterie supper to relax and graze upon? Nothing. 010
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Happy Pub Day to Matt Goldman, one of the best. Best authors, best people. 000
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Full house at RJ Julia Booksellers to hear James R. Benn in conversation with Karen Olson about his latest—Book 21 in his Billy Boyle WW2 series, The Ninth Circle. It was a great event. His tour continues this week (see panel on right). 020

tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Just watched Ep 1. Two major improvements: Adding Nigella; subtracting the sketch comedy. They have achieved the sweet and salty balance. 010

tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 19/09/2026BOTD David McCallum. We shared a flight one Sunday a month from JFK to Burbank. He was commuting to play Ducky; I was a writer for Craig Ferguson. Once he asked me to write jokes for his Robert Vaughn roast and said he'd pay $5 for every one he used. He still owes me $20. 040
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 18/09/2026BOTD 1932, Robert B. Parker. Such an early inspiration to me. Met him at a book signing at Vroman's in Pasadena. Instead of a book, I presented him with the bill of my Boston Braves hat. He was amused, signed it, and we had one fine chat, we did. 020

tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 12/09/2026One more 25th Anniversary post. 2 weeks after, I had business in Manhattan and captured these documentary shots that made real what seemed unreal. Unseen are the railroad commuter lots full of cars whose drivers never came back to claim them. So much we can't shake. 020
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Weekend reading. With humble thanks to the author for including me in his Acks. 000
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 11/09/2026These Angells are in heaven. My friends David and Lynn Angell left Cape Cod to fly out of Boston to go to the Emmys. Their plane was the first one to hit the World Trade Center. A quarter century later, it still pains me. They were lovely, generous people who are remembered and missed like so many. 1225

tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Our vanity causes us to dismiss four talented humans from another century gathering to play a work of genius because there is static. The window on another time doesn't need to be spotless if the view is of spirit and greatness. 030

tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Number 6 trivia: 6 of Patrick McGoohan's Danger Man episodes were shot in Portmeirion, Wales, later known as The Village. Who else always felt Number Six was really John Drake? 000
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I hold an enduring affection for The Prisoner, which began shooting 60 years ago this month. My friends know this because they’re junkies, too. Everyone else is, well, unmutual. 120
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I have another friend, a drummer, who spotted him once and he denied he was Donald. So, I feel lucky. I confess I blathered like a fanboy. He was patient with me. And quite pleasant. 110
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Saw him in NYC about 15 years ago. He was standing outside the backstage of the Beacon, wrapping a cellphone call. I worked up my courage and we had a brief exchange. I hear he's notoriously prickly, but was very nice to me. A hero. 110
tomstraw @tomstraw.bsky.social · 04/09/2026So long to Jeff Spurgeon who just signed off his morning show on WQXR to begin his retirement after 30 years at New York City's classical music station. Godspeed, sir. And thank you. 010
