Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16hHey folks, here's an interesting survey inviting you to share your experiences with foxes and pine martens across the island of Ireland. 🦊🧪🌍🦤 uupredatorsurvey.com 052
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 02/10/2026Yes, I agree and that would be a different kind of progress. Not in managing or reducing deer numbers, though. 000
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 02/10/2026@adamfsmith.bsky.social feel free to pull me up on this ~2000 figure. 000
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 02/10/2026Don't quote me on numbers though, this is not from any research, I was just playing with numbers some time ago. We'd need thousands of wolves in any case to do anything with deer numbers we have. The 'enormous (cull) effort & resources' you mentioned is a more realistic scenario IMO. 211
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 02/10/2026Agree. And that also means that any wolf restoration project would have no chance of making dent either. Leaving the realm of reality, to keep the current population at same level you'd need ~2000 wolves and that's side-by-side with existing hunting. That's almost as many as Poland has (unofficial). 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 02/10/2026Brother Wolf, Ireland has no single cull or target figure and there's no such thing as a national(?) cull. Deer are shot under Section 29 (recreational hunters), Section 42 (damage control, out of season) and by state staff (NPWS + OPW, ~3% of the total), in a rather ad hoc, mostly voluntary manner. 110
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 01/10/2026Where? In Ireland? There was no cull or culling programme to speak of. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 01/10/2026I read your post as culling doesn't work (limited success) and instead (needed are predators). In the particular context, predators wont make the difference without extensive culling first. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 01/10/2026Well, yep. That the entire different dimension to the whole convo, isn't it! 110
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 01/10/2026The post you quoted agrees with what I said while you seem to disagree. The quoted article does neither, so I'm a bit confused as to what point you're trying to make. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 01/10/2026Let's stay in the realm of reality, Wolf. Culling guarantees greater success than restoring the predator population and in a much shorter time. 310
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 30/09/2026My feed here is dedicated to nature, science and conservation, and I swear, sometimes I'm tempted to start posting about AI to call out the grift Dario and Clammy spouted, which the dumb media and journos swallowed hook, line and sinker. And now you good people are repeating it as if it were facts. 001
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 29/09/2026re dying in agony, I believe it's like less than 1/3 infected animals the ever develop visible signs of the disease. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 29/09/2026Extinction is the normal fate of a species. Nearly everything that has ever lived is extinct. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 29/09/2026There is no overpopulation problem. There is overconsumption problem. 120
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 27/09/2026Doesn't sound like this at all. AI replacing tech jobs did not materialise and in fact the number of open positions is going up. How it sounds like is that they over-hired like most companies in the last number of years and now they're downsizing. AI hype bros want us to believe it's because of AI. 000
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 24/09/2026Why does Ireland have so many deer, and would bringing back the wolf fix it? How did rat poison end up in 80% of our barn owls? And are farmers really the villains? I asked biologist and broadcaster Éanna Ní Lamhna. Her answer to the deer problem: eat venison. 🌍🦤 🎧 pod.fo/e/64d361 063
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 21/09/2026When I was a kid, I caught a few three-spined sticklebacks in a local pond and tried to keep them in an aquarium, using my best knowledge learnt from keeping guppies and Sumatra barbs. It didn't end well for the sticklebacks. I could have done with a video like yours back then. 🤭 000
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 19/09/2026After returning from my podcasting holidays, I made some changes to how I do things and how I promote the show. Some of them are more visible than others. As things stand now, Bluesky is the only social media platform I'm on. I focus on long and thoughtful, not short and punchy.medium.comWhy I’m Not Coming Back to InstagramI grabbed my phone, something I had learned not to do habitually, and opened Instagram to post about the latest episode of my podcast. But… 050
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 18/09/2026The 203 was the best I could do, as @wicklowaxes.bsky.social is the only one with the balls to actually take on this subject on the record.tommysoutdoors.com203: TB in Deer: An Irish Hunter’s Guide to the Uncomfortable RealityIs TB in deer a growing concern for Irish hunters? What happens when you shoot a deer infected with TB, and what are the realities from a hunter’s perspective? In this episode of the Conserva… 001
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 18/09/2026I tried hard to make an episode about TB. No one wants to talk about it and as far as I can remember, it's the only topic a guest has ever flagged before recording as something they didn't want to discuss and asked me not to bring up. 231
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 18/09/2026This is extremely shitty situation and I'm so sorry, Tom. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16/09/2026Dario thinks he's ahead so he wants all to stop. Huang is screwed if they do. I laughed when I saw this headline. 010
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16/09/2026I've just checked the latest from Mistral and their top model is already the Chinese GLM-5.2 max, which scores ~30 on trust-me-bro benchmarks, while their own best Mistral model is ~15. Oh, and the EU has ~5% of global inference compute capacity which is a bit of a problem too, if you ask me. 200
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16/09/2026Definitely not SAP. They're tinkering at the edges with domain-specific models, not LLMs and go to Anthropic for the frontier stuff. Mistral is hopelessly behind and is mostly after regulatory lock-in to alleviate that. The EU is more likely to turn to Chinese open-weights models than build its own. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16/09/2026Yup, the overchoice issue is real, and I feel it from both sides, as a consumer of content and as a content creator. 021
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 16/09/2026I'm not sure whether, with my 'Conservation and Science' podcast, I'm part of the problem or part of the solution. 🧪 151
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 15/09/2026What does the label 'protected area' actually tell you about what is being protected? How did the wolf lose its strict protection status in the EU? And what about a legal system that looks strong on paper but leaves animals exposed on the ground? I asked two wildlife lawyers. 🌍 🧪🦤 🎧 pod.fo/e/6179bf 053
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 15/09/2026Interesting question and one I've been wondering about myself. I'm afraid the answer is still 'no' and IMO it has nothing to do with women vs men and more to do with the traits of the people who end up 'running the world' under the current system. The system itself would need to be different. 🌍 060

Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 14/09/2026I'm quite chuffed about the refresh I gave my website over the weekend, so I thought I'd drop a feed here from the 'science' category, where you can find podcast episodes with scientists talking about their projects, papers or books. 🧪 📚 tommysoutdoors.com/category/sci... 020

Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 09/09/2026I see that we have smoothly moved from 'AI will take our jobs' to 'AI will kill us all'. And all that to divert our attention from the fact that frontier labs are money-burning machines with no business model and no plausible path to profitability. 020
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 07/09/2026Is this the real answer? Social inequality fucks up everything. Environment and society in equal measure. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 07/09/2026Yea sure and thanks for that. What I meant was things like economy, infrastructure, living standards, average income, etc. 100
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 07/09/2026Thanks for that. Is it the same in the Western states? Is the difference between former DDR and Western part still very visible? I thought their base would consist of older people not younger. 😕 120
Tommy's Outdoors @tommysoutdoors.com · 06/09/2026I can picture Eoghan cycling on a vintage fixie, wearing his signature cap instead of a helmet! 140
