“JUST A QUICK SKETCH” I only had a moment or two. In Maine, I had seen many mounted deer heads and moose heads. However, I only had a quick glimpse of a mounted LobMoose. Or was it a dream? Sketched very quickly with a PLATINUM Carbon fountain pen in a 9” x 12” Bristol pad.

“KAYAKARACK +” The Thursday Morning Sketchmob returned to its roots, the L.L. Bean flagship store, newly reopened after a two-year renovation. There was plenty to sketch in the courtyard. My primary focus werr that kayaks on the rack. And of course there was Mike! And also the boot.

“BOWDOIN BITS IN BEIGE” The Tuesday Afternoon Sketchmob spent a delightful September afternoon on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick ME. I sketched a few “view nits” with a MUJI fountain, pen, a grey alcohol marker and a white gel pen in a 9“ x 12“ Borden & Riley #840 Kraft Pad.

“ THE JOKE WAS ON ME!” Still armed with only a MUJI fountain pen, some colored pencils and a small MUJI sketchbook, I admit that Goldie the Pig fooled me by only pretending to dream about growing a rhino horn! That novelty store horn sure looked real to me!

“WHAAAT?” Armed at the moment with only a MUJI fountain pen and a small MUJI sketchbook, I very, very quickly captured the moment when Goldie the Pig dreamt that his regular porcine shnozzola had been replaced by a rhino horn! Who even knew that pigs had dreams? DOODLEWASH August 2026 Day 28.

“PEOPLE PRACTICE” Sketches of people, two ways. Top folks were drawn from images on thesepeopledontexist.com. Yup, just AI generated images that look like real people, but not. The lower three were done live at Wild Oats Bakery/Cafe. All doodled with a MUJI fountain pen in a 6” x 8” MUJI sketchbook.

The Thursday Morning Sketchmob met on the lawn in front of the Freeport Town Hall. My subject was the view across Main Street at MADE (A coffee shop and design store) and some of the adjacent structures. Done with a MUJI Fountain pen in an A5 MUJI sketchbook.

“WALTER:MIXED UP” The original leading character in my work with The Mötley Tribe, Walter Ego, the artist and sorta-leader of the group, is utilized here in an experiment. The sketch combines water-soluble and permanent ink, oil pastel, water-based pastel, acrylic paint and watercolor.

I attend figure drawing sessions whenever I can, as it is great practice. Most of the year, that means PINECONE STUDIO in Brunswick. These sketches were done in an 11” x 14” CANSON Mixed Media sketchbook. Some were done with a PENTEL “Tradio Stylo pen with water-soluble ink.

“FALLS POINT MARINE” The THURSDAY MORNING SKETCHMOB gathered in numbers at this scenic spot. My sketch continued my experimentation with the use of a dip pen, with MONTEVERDRE “Sepie Joy” ink. The tone in the water was achieved my using a brush dipped in the water used to clean the dip pen point.

Recently, the Tuesday Afternoon sketch mob met up at the Bath (Maine) waterfront. I was accompanied by my son and grandson, sketchers also. My subject was the reconstruction of the 1607 pinnace “Virginia”, which was the first English ocean-going ship built in the Americas (1607).

A throng of the Thursday morning Sketchmob assembled at the delightful Orchard House Inn & Cafe on a beautiful day. A favorite winter indoor sketching location, this was the first time for Plein Air work. My subjects were the Inn portion of the complex (a W.I.P.) and my son at work.
