iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Finally let me say that DHH is not the only guy behind Rails. He definitely has the last word on many topics, but I think that judging the entire project and the work of many thousands based on one guy is kinda disrespectful for everyone else involved.

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 21/09/2025

Also I have to say that most of the original argument is based on things happening outside of the Rails project. I yet have to see someone's PR rejected because DHH disagreed with him/her on politics. For sure I've seen it happen for technical reasons or collisions with the overall vision.

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 21/09/2025

Maybe this is where my European mentality collides with yours. Even though I would't mind living in an emphatic environment, the correlation between that and the success or failure of a project is not obvious to me and definitely not proven...

100

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 21/09/2025

Of course I'm not saying that you should not argue or disagree with someone else, but that should stay outside the OS space. Last time I checked, it was supposed to be a common good for all humankind. As long as the project is going in the right technical direction, it's not a concern for me. Sorry

100

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 21/09/2025

This take is really concerning tbh... OS is a collective effort by definition. We can all have the most diverse views on life, but we should all put that aside to achieve great things together. It's unreasonable to never have to interact with people you disagree with.

100

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

This horrific period ended only when the silent majority and moderates from the entire political spectrum started to speak up against intolerant people and found a middle ground. So I guess my point is simply that we should all try to be more moderate and lower the tension. That’s it.

110

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

The problem is that all of this doesn’t recall the 20s and the rise of fascism to me. It’s more like the 70s in Italy where people were extremely polarized and politically divided. We suffered from a bunch of terrible terrorist/bomb attacks from both left and right extremists...

100

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

Not really sure what you’re referring to here: “the leader openly supports people who want you dead”. You meant Tommy Robinson & Co?

200

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

I disagree myself with many DHH’s views, but that doesn’t affect my judgment of Rails nor my involvement in the project. P.S: don’t you think fascist is kind of a strong word in this context? I’m Italian and trust me, it’s not something you’d tell to every right-leaning/conservative person

320

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

Trust me it’s not sealioning, I’m simply and genuinely worried… Since all these posts start with “I love Rails”, my assumption is that the project is actually going in the right direction. OS is a collective effort and by definition you must be open to collaborate with many different people.

100

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

You're right, polarization sucks... we've had our fair share of political terrorism and divisions both in Italy and in Europe as a whole. We only solved the problem when the silent majority began speaking up and bringing reason and moderation back to the table. I have the same hope for the US.

010

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 20/09/2025

Maybe it's my European mentality, but I really don't understand why someone's opinions should invalidate their work. I've yet to find a comment in the source code that promotes far-right agendas... If you don't like their views, just stop reading the blog or listening to the podcasts.

The next stop in the Ruby Triathlon is the most special 🥹 @friendlyrb.com, my favourite conference! Plus this year we have @lucianghinda.com's coffee corner and I'm super excited about that. I bring coffee and cocoa from Madrid, and... I made special edition Mochi stickers! Only available there ☕

Last night I gave #Atomfall a try and man... hours went by without me even noticing it. The world is packed with secrets and interesting things to do or discover. Can't wait to keep discovering the secrets of Windscale! In the meantime I strongly recommend checking it out. #game #xbox #gaming

It’s finally here!!! OMG typing on this thing feels amazing. Literally like tapping on marble 😍 I still need some time to get comfortable with the new ANSI layout but I can already see the benefit from a development point of view. #indiedev #keyboard #buildinpublic

What a nice surprise they made me last night 😍 The stickers and t-shirts for the @panini.house anniversary are really gorgeous! We usually see our brand just on a screen at home. However, being able to actually touch these things IRL is a completely different experience #buildinpublic #indiedev

Ok, no work this morning... My OCD tripped me up and now I must clean and polish every single inch of the desk. From the monitor to the tiniest usb stick 🙄

Rough sketches for the icon of our new app called Orchestrator. It allows users to open mailto links in their favourite webmail. We choose that last one. Make sense? Personally I liked the puppeteer one, but someone at the office thought it was a bit creepy… 🙄🌚 #SwiftUI #indiedev #buildinpublic

That’s a great one too! Personally I went for the Evo because I’m lazy and scared to mess everything up with soldering ahahah Anyway I went with the Oat Linear + PP Plate. I’m a thock kind of person ahah. What about you?

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 18/03/2025

Just got confirmation that my new Evo80 mechanical keyboard has been delivered by the manufacturer and should arrive next week 😍🥹 It should sound and feel amazing, but it will also be my first ANSI keyboard! I’m curious to see if it’s a better layout for programming as they say or not

An evo80 mechanical keyboard in the Anodized Nimbus color scheme. It has a TKL form factor and an ANSI layout.

I have to admit… the latest version of #SwiftUI feels mature enough for serious macOS apps. Every year I give it a try with a small side project, but this is the first I didn’t have to fall back on good old Cocoa. It’s just me or did you experience the same?

020

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 17/03/2025

The app is almost ready. We just have to craft a beautiful icon and test different providers. Follow @panini.house for further announcements on the release. Did I already say it's going to be completely free?? Enjoy!

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 17/03/2025

Last week I decided to tackle a very annoying problem. At @panini.house we use hey.com for emails. Therefore, we cannot use the default Apple Mail client. Orchestrator 🎸 is a free #TinyApp that will help you redirect mailto links to web based email providers. Problem solved. #Swift #SwiftUI

Any chance Arco will come to Xbox soon? Balatro is already there 😁

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 11/03/2025

Absolutely! Still a long way to go to convince many of our colleagues but every year I advocate for an Adobe free world with all my students ahahah maybe one day…

Tommaso Negri @tommaso.panini.house · 11/03/2025

Apple Motion is great! It’s one of the many great tools that allowed me to cancel my Adobe subscription. It may not have all the features, but it’s certainly good enough for me and probably for the vast majority!
