I’m on a train from Paddington to Bristol right now - and it’s on time. Some trains are running but without calling at eg Reading

Even simpler to just raise the tax free allowance for all (and tinker at the other end to make the change cost neutral - at least). Then make triple lock the AVERAGE of the three factors. Then drop the 2.5% element.

There are still some classic art deco buildings round the corner on Brentford’s Great West Road (JC Decaux is one). In 1980 the Firestone building there was demolished - the weekend before it was due to be listed for preservation!

I used to be a ’bitter’ person but have gone off darker beers in favour of those with more hops, less alcohol, more taste. They tend to call themselves pale ales. IPA has a distinct heritage - from being shipped to warmer India - and a good IPA is hard to beat!

I recently saw evidence of such a crackdown working in Singapore (vape sales illegal) and Australia, where closed stores are readily identifiable, all stock seized, even in Sydney CBD. It can be done!

Fascinating thread! Agree re Love Island, Traitors, cocaine, Lottery ticket etc. but for others suggested I appear to have done an alarming number once and once only (eg been on a motorbike, ordered an Uber, placed a bet). A new thread required???

I’m on my travels. Vaping and almost all public smoking banned in Singapore. In Sydney we saw three shops around George St closed down by law for illegal vape sales, all stock seized. These are policies that most people appear to accept, even support! Go for it!

Ann Widdecombe was a formidable opponent on many issues (though not all) when I was in the Commons but on a personal level she took a genuine interest in colleagues of all parties. Even on the Labour benches many of us would have described her as a friend. A cruel, unnecessary, untimely loss

So sad to hear that Chris Breiseth has died in New York at 89. I wrote a biography of Frances Perkins (1880-1965), 1st female Cabinet member in USA (1932-45), and Chris was my last living link to her. His passion for her and all her good causes was tangible and quite wonderful
