Great news, Jason! This should increase your ability to influence forest policy.

Sorry, but this is not a photo of a real tree. You refer to it in one place as a pedunculate oak, in another as the Angel oak. It is neither. No real oak branches like this.

Nice photo of a lovely tree. I need to make more Gambel oak photos. I took this one on the shoulders of Humphreys Peak outside of Flagstaff. I guess I need more western trips.

This is one of the most exciting science stories I’ve read in a newspaper in quite some time. I wish @couchmicroscopy.bsky.social all the best in her new position.

Joshua trees are uncommon, with a limited range, and threatened by climate change. Read what scientists are doing to stabilize the species.

This old bur oak, Quercus macrocarpa, on the University of Kentucky campus is one of my favorites for its fine form. It predates the existence of the university by several hundred years. Unfortunately, that building behind the tree was filling with people and the parking lot was jammed.

Thank you for this fascinating story, Jason. I haven’t yet seen this issue of Sci Am. I think this story may find a place in my next book.

Thank you Doc. Although I am primarily a tree biologist, I have a botanists interest in other plants, especially their history with humans.

Let me recommend David Quammen’s outstanding book The Tangled Tree, which takes a deep look at the changes in biology during Woese’s life.

When the fruit falls or is ready to fall - comes off the tree when you touch the fruit or shake the tree. These are the most delicious of all tree nuts, so it’s worth taking the time to harvest when ripe.

This is a beautiful and interesting tree. It is a yellow-poplar or tulip poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera, in the magnolia family. True poplars, Populus spp. never live this long. I visited this tree many years ago.

Autumn is arriving and trees are preparing for the cold. This is not a simple response of trees to changing weather, but a complex series of physiologic events in trees that begins in early spring. Have a look at Our Trees.

I am very fortunate because, at age 15, I had my first job at Johns Hopkins in the Child Life Program providing nonmedical care - playing, reading, teaching - to children with severe life-long problems. I learned to value and respect each person I meet, regardless of their ability or prospects.

Programmable design of synthetic plant immune receptors for pathogen protein recognition
The limited diversity and recognition scope of natural plant immune receptors impede resistance breeding against rapidly evolving pathogens. Here, we report the programmable design of synthetic plant ...

This is meaningful work. I appreciate your conclusion "In sum, higher concentrations of non-structural carbohydrate, lower δ13C values and higher stem growth rates all point towards higher net carbon assimilation by conifers...," without speculating too broadly. We await the next chapter.

This was the first Nobel Prize, to Lorenz, Tinbergen, and von Frisch, awarded for animal behavior research. I was a biology undergrad then, and this award was a major change in what was deemed important in biology.

This is the right choice if you qualify. Most arborists are after maximum revenue from tree "care". I have worked with many arborists and am not a big fan of the business. Consulting arborists, who are probably outside of your. budget, are the most inclined to be honest.
