Turns out Andrew’s a nonce.

Completely agree. I had fun in the 70s, and then the 80s was ghastly.

Yep, loads of shite through the ages, but I have a sense that in the 70s the good stuff (and we’ll all differ about what that might be) was more mainstream, whereas now you have to actively search for it. Someone as quirky as, say, Joni Mitchell might remain a struggling niche artist these days.

Agreed, there’s plenty of good stuff out there (which my offspring also listen to, and indeed, in my daughter’s case, make); but there is an overwhelming amount of shite, which makes it hard for the good stuff to get heard.

And my offspring - early 20s - listen to all that 70s stuff avidly, not because I’ve suggested it, but because it’s so much better. Sheeran’s songs are, for me, unutterably bland, designed to offend as few people as possible, rather like his non-politics.

What makes me angry is the name ‘Essential Classics’, which is so ghastly I can’t even bring myself to listen to the program at all.

It was the chain, rather than the bicycle, that contorted itself, since you ask.

Tom Kane @tomkane62.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
My wife’s bicycle recently threw its chain, and contorted itself into a twisted, implausible nightmare. I gave up after many hours, lavishly oiled, pinched, beaten, humiliated. A man came and fixed it in 5 minutes. I comfort myself he doesn’t understand sonata form.

All day, there’s been a disconcerting smell of smoke here in North Gloucestershire. The hills a mile away are hazed and blue and murky. I gather there are fires in S Wales, 50 or 100 miles away. I don’t like it one bit.

A deepening fog of smoke here in Gloucestershire. Been with us all day. Apparently drifting from South Wales.

Without lockdowns the NHS would have been entirely overwhelmed; but what was needed was earlier, shorter lockdowns, and less fannying about.

As it happens I agree about Stevie Wonder and Bach. I might add Dark Side of the Moon/Wish you were Here. Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel up there too.

The problem with this is that sport is not a matter of opinion (at least real sports, as opposed to eg figure skating, ski jump, gymnastics), whereas art is. 6 6’s is unarguable, but if I suggest the 4 symphonies of Brahms, others might foolishly disagree.

I was once evacuated from a train that was properly on fire, outside Reading. Smoke at first outside, and then inside, the carriage. Had to walk along the tracks, and everything.

Considerably higher, I’d imagine. It was in the way of a gentle tease. Are you still playing? I keep going with the local village team on Wednesdays to play with my son (who’s a proper decent league cricketer at the weekends).

Not my experience. I’ve made my living as a composer (for tv) since 1992; when music became cheap to produce (laptops) it drove the value of the music down, so that we now earn a fraction of what we used to. And cheap music meant tv companies were prepared to accept a lower standard.

Couldn’t agree more. Britain is, at worst, a bit frayed around the edges. Arriving from space, and given a choice of places to live, I think many aliens might choose Britain. Not to say we should be complacent though: bad people are keen to break it properly, for their own ends.

Rather than apologising for his antisemitism, Farage demands the BBC apologise for the antisemitism of Alf Garnett, a fictional character created to satirise antisemitism, who was portrayed by a Jewish man.

Satisfactory, I thank you. Hope yours was too. These days I can’t be arsed to interrogate the statements too closely - there doesn’t seem much I can do to influence anything in any direction so I’d rather not know. I just look at the figure at the bottom.
