My Labrador has been zapped three times, and each time looks at me like I did it. Quite funny though.

I’ve read the history books, watched the YouTube videos, and now have a very clear idea of the problems facing the Balkans, and who’s to blame. But I’m keeping it to myself because I don’t want my nose cut off and my house burned down.

A bit of both. The Dolomites are eroding at quite a fast rate, and the permafrost that holds these mountains together is melting.

Huge rockfalls in the Tofane group (WW1 battlefield in the Dolomites, 1915-1917) last weekend. The Austrian position of Tre Dita is visible in the bottom left of the first photo. Exploring these mountains is becoming quite hazardous. #TiTM

It’s not too late to sign up for this wonderful event. I’ve done an all-new, mountain-specific presentation, and will be giving my talk while dressed thematically. @ntwf.bsky.social

Ha! I’m not sure my 30s and 40s count as my youth. Once was during a wheelie contest at Le Mans, the other was at the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen. Just an innocent bystander, honest Guv.

I’ve been tear-gassed twice (once by the CRS), and can confirm it’s really horrible. He has my sympathies.

I’ll admit to being riveted by the Manchester City thing. It just gets worse and worse. As my mother (and Seneca) would say, “Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas."

I suspect the cyclo-tourism aspect may be negligible, but can’t be sure. You should probably start with Across France in Wartime, by Kuklos. He illegally rode to the front lines in 1914.

Depends if you ever plan on visiting those areas. Haven’t read it myself, and don’t know the authors.

Absolutely. Not perfect, but if you get cancer, or hit by a bus, it’s bloody brilliant. If we could persuade billionaires to pay their taxes, it would be even better.

No probs. The buses in that part of the world are pretty good, might be worth asking at hotel reception (or using Rome2Rio app. Either way, have a great time!

Also 40 mins from you is the Marmolada Great War museum. Cable car from Malga Ciapella to Serauta station, museum and cafe up there, walk across to trenches and dugouts on Punta Serauta and/or up towards Forcella V to get a feel for how thin the air is at 3000m.

The Lagazuoi tunnels at Passo Falzarego are about 40 mins drive from you. Cable car up, lunch at rifugio, great views from the top, and trenches. Walk back down through the tunnels (or explore down as far as Cengia Martini, then get cable car down). Also Forte Tre Sassi is just down the road…

As a teenager with an interest in photography, my father gave me this book and an old East German SLR. They sparked a lifelong passion for photography and journalism. Mercifully the book survived our recent flood (the camera was sold long ago).
