Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 18/09/2026I’m currently trying to write up the thesis, so I’ll try to remember to pass that on when its done. The Easel is part of a wider project, so I’ll probably try to split things into smaller papers eventually too. Thanks for the interest! Perhaps the wordcount will increase a little faster today… 120
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 18/09/2026I chose to have neodymium magnets of different sizes and strengths vs electro as I was after a static outcome, and it is much simpler. The easel can be composed using three different modules, with different sizes and densities of magnets, and with each magnet’s position finely controllable! 020
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 18/09/2026Thanks for sharing Hannah! Great to see these pictures (although I am learning that my face seems particularly animated when lecturing…) 010
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 18/09/2026This is correct, I wanted to be able to create a continuous field shape that harmonised with the topology of the given subject matter, and so designed a program and ‘Easel’ to sculpt the field just so! 110

Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 15/09/2026What’s more, it’s all sold out! I can’t believe it, and can’t wait. There will be some seating available on the door, and you can also read this interview I did with @alanbarker830.bsky.social over on the @britsciassoc.bsky.social blog: www.britishscienceassociation.org/blog/what-is...britishscienceassociation.orgWhat is Electromagnetic Art?Writer and science communication expert Alan Barker speaks to Tom Hyatt from Liverpool John Moores University ahead of his British Science Festival 2026 Award Lecture, 'Electromagnetic art'. 122
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 15/09/2026I’ll be talking about James Clerk Maxwell, who created our first representation of the electromagnetic field. I’ll be talking about travelling to the USA chasing the most electromagnetic medium I could think of. And I’ll be demonstrating some of the original art practice developed in my research. 100
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 15/09/2026Tomorrow all that work comes together at #BritishScienceFestival at @unisouthampton.bsky.social , where I’ve been selected to deliver this year’s ‘Science and the Arts’ Award Lecture. 111
Tom Hyatt @tomhyatt.co.uk · 15/09/2026Over the last six years, I’ve been doing a PhD at @ljmuofficial.bsky.social at the interface between art and science, researching ‘Electromagnetic Art’: What is it? How might we make it? Why would we want to? 251
